EU [WTB][UK] Low cost workstation with 128GB RAM

Hi,

I'm looking for a quiet workstation with at least 128GB RAM to process some large GIS datasets. Something like a HP Z620, Dell T5610 or Dell T7610 would do nicely. A single E5 CPU would suffice. A single 1TB SSD would be nice, but I can provide my own if need be. I don't have any special graphics card requirements.

I'm on a shoestring budget, as this is a side-project I'm working on during the lockdown. Looking to spend around £300.

I realise this is a long shot, and I'm not expecting something very modern, but I thought someone might be doing some spring cleaning and have something spare!

Single processor E5 motherboards are always going to be significantly more expensive. Your best bet is to find a first gen (V0) E5-2650/2660/2670, they go for a fraction of what the V2’s go for, and the performance difference isn’t (At least in my opinion) worth it to go to the V2 since you are on a budget.

V1 2670s can be had for 70 bucks or less and then you should be able to find 128GB of DDR3 for cheap and so on and so on but getting all of these parts and then building it and such you’re better off finding a pre-built used system on eBay perhaps a surplus build somewhere. But 300 pounds is a bit low imo you should be closer to 500

My 2cents: Determine whether your use case is relient on single/multi-threaded performance. You can get some E-5 v1 and v2 CPUs that are better at single-threaded performance at a fraction of what the high core CPUs cost. You would be looking at E5-16xx v1/v2 parts.

If you can find 8x 16gb for 100 and a z420 for 200, you can do this for 300. I know for fact that the z420 will take up to 256gb using 32gb LRDIMMs.

I'm currently selling a T610 on ebay. This might come in on budget once you've stacked it up with ram, and if you don't need some of the "extras" then I can strip them out and offer free shipping instead?
