Here's a chance for you to clean out your junk drawers :D

I am looking for:
  • Q9650 CPU [Qty 1]
  • 4GB DDR3-1066 or -1333 unbuffered / non-ECC (desktop) memory [Qty 4]
  • Cheap 2.5" SATA SSD > 250GB (can be SATA 2) [Qty 1]
As you may have gathered, I'm fixing / upgrading a system for a friend and trying to keep costs down. I'm hoping STH members may have some / all of this in their "junk drawers". Parts need to be working, but "scratch and dent" is OK.

If that memory is meant for the same system as the Q9650, I think it might be DDR2 instead of DDR3? I could be wrong...

Another option instead of the Q9650, is to get a really cheap Xeon E5450 and use a 771-775 socket adapter tape. The Xeon has lower TDP but very similar specs. I did this on an old computer and it ran cooler and worked great. I had an extra one up until a few months ago but sold it already.

The chipset is the Q45 Express, so it can use DDR3 (and that's how it is set up in this system).

The system is a Dell Optiplex 780, and I've seen several reports like this one that 5xxx-series Xeon CPUs won't work in it, even with a modified BIOS. It seems to be limited to 3xxx-series Xeons.

I have something similar to what you are looking for but a bit older.
Q9550 with a P5Q-EM motherboard.
This is DDR2 but I should have DDR2 kicking around.
The slots in the board must be filled (4GB?) maybe 8GB

I should have some smaller SSD say 90G or 120G ... maybe even a 30G somewhere.

This is an odd form factor Dell Optiplex 780, so I'm stuck with the motherboard I have (which is actually a decent one if you don't need lots of slots / overclock / etc.).

SSD needs to be > 250GB in order to fit Windows + the user's programs and data. I don't want to get involved in re-installing Windows on a smaller drive, even if everything would fit.
