You seem to be misunderstanding the whole concept of DIY projects. The guy just went through his spare parts bin and picked whatever was available. You do not have to buy the same exact parts he used to achieve the same result.

All you need is a 5.5" 256x64 SSD1322 display (~$55) and a 30 pin 0.5 pitch FPC adapter (~$2) you can order from aliexpress.
