So I know someone who is offering an intel R2208LT2HKC4 server, barebone.

It's a system targeted at HPC, it has room for 4 E5-4600 CPU's and up to 1,5TB of ram.

I think it's cool to experiment with and I can get it for an affordable price, $800-1000. But I'm wondering if there is a resell market for this, should I eventually want to sell it again...

I can't find any ebay listings for these things so it's hard to tell...

Any advice, what would you do?

Cheers,
John.

@John M.

We had a thread on 4P machines recently: 4P Xeon E5-4600 V2 system barebones That may have some comparison information.

It is going to be harder to sell these in the future as 2P systems with new DDR4 modules will have similar cores/ memory capacity as the 4P V1 systems.

That being said, I look at the R820's about once a week :)

You should check the availability of E5-46xx chips on the used market before you buy. There are a few ES chips running around at good prices, and a thin selection of reasonably priced "retail" CPUs in the $200-500 range. But after that you pay retail (e.g., $1000+ per CPU).

If you want to play in the E5 v1 space your much better off with the 2 socket systems, perhaps paying a bit more/socket for the chassis + MB than the deal you have available, but saving many$$$ picking up E5-2670 v1 CPUs <$100 each.

I am inclined to agree with @PigLover - that is how I ended up buying the C6220 system. The chassis was cheaper (with 10Gb no less), had remote management built-in, and then with the E5-2670's being so inexpensive I was able to offset a good portion of the costs from buying more RAM (since I was populating for 8 sockets not 4).
