I am looking to put a FreeNAS device offsite for backups.

Performance really isn't an issue. I am looking to buy a box that can handle 4 3.5" drives. More compact is better, but not a big concern.

I am hoping I can find something ready to go, and avoid the hassle of researching compatibility, building it, etc...

Are you interested in Tower servers? Or only rack mounts?

EDIT: Maybe @Patrick can move this post to the correct location. I think it's in the wrong thread.

Easy solution if you can't find something ready made:

C236 chipset mITX motherboard (Supermicro or Asrock are good)
Pentium g4600
16gb ddr4 ecc udimms
Fractal Node 304 case
PSU and SATA cables and you're good to go.

Or Avoton/Denverton Atom.

Should run ~$600 + drives, and pull 30-40 watts before your drives.

I have a Microserver N54L that I can part with. It has the modified bios, 16GB ram and a hotswap cage installed in the CD Rom bay for a total of 5 drives.

PM me if interested.

Right now it is running Freenas with 5 3tb drives in RaidZ2 and is being used for nightly backups of my workstation.

Also have a Silverstone DS380 based system but that is a consumer asus board with and i5 processor and probably not a good fit for freenas.

Thanks for the quick build. I appreciate the advice if I end up going that route.

Just posted my FreeNAS Mini for sale. Upgraded RAM, all compatibility vetted out by iXsystems as they build these. Awesome discount for a machine and HDDs that have not been used for over a year.
