I make a the noob mistake and got a Supermicro 846 with SAS1 backplane. So I'm looking to upgrade to the SAS2 version.

Looks like Patrick is selling BPN-SAS2-836EL2.

If I could find the TQ version of the backplane (single ports no expander), will that work with drives over 2TB?
It would be cable hell, but I could deal with it. I already have all the break out cables from existing server.

I found one ebay for $300 +$15. Is that a good price?

The TQ backplane will work with greater than 2TB drives as it is a direct connection to your HBA. It would be cable hell as you say so you would be better served with a BPN-SAS-846A which groups 4 drives per SFF8087 cable so six cables to connect all 24 drives. I just replaced the SAS2 expander in my SC216 with the A backplane and it works great.

I have one (BPN-SAS2-846EL2) that I could offer you but its in the EU, so not sure its worth the trouble. But in a worst case scenario you could consider it:)

if 12 drives (or was it 8?) and hold you over for a while, SAS1 backplane can handle 4Tb drive no issue.

I did not know about the BPN-SAS-846A! That is what I really need as I already have Intel RES2SV240 sas expander.

So anyone one have a BPN-SAS-846A for sale?
