Oh yeah, I never bothered to do a writeup regarding the Nitto Kogyo System Rack FS series or NKFS1 - well, here's some photos of the rack packaging in question:

Sleeve (for the packaging):

Front of the box (it's really an enclosure+sever 2-pack, but since you are getting the enclosure the modular rack is not included)

Left side of the box (a short intro to Nitto Kogyo or East Japan industries)

1750709798286.png

Back of the box (lists included components in the box)

Right side of the box (mentions how fragile the "cable" really were, along with the customer support line #...

And a quick photo of what the rack looks like in terms of dimensions...

More in-depth look...next.

Oh yeah, for those who are patiently awaiting PNES3 - well, it just came out in Japan, and on June 10th, Tarlin published their list of vendors in Japan carrying the series (in Japanese of course)...and it looks to have a much wider availability this time around.

In terms of gacha chains
a) Gashacoco (a medium sized Gacha chain)
b) GachaGacha no Mori ガチャガチャの森 - Gacha Gacha Forest
c) Bandai-Namco's Gachapon no Departo ガシャポンのデパート capsule toy stores
d) Capsule Rakkyoku (カプセル楽局) - which is a regional gacha chain out in the Kanto/Tokyo Bay area. Oh, there's a joke embedded in the name - 楽局 Rakkyoku is "joy agency") while 薬局 Yakkyokyu is "medicinal agency" or pharmacy. Their TV ads do say something like "a spin a day is your prescription to joy".
e) #c-pla stores
f) Dream Capsule (ドリームカプセル)

Those 6 were not included in the previous rounds, but the other standards like ones in Tsutaya bookstores. Akachan honpo or Kenele stand in the JR Akihabara station are still present. Oh well, if you are planning on a trip to Japan, give those places a try. Bandai Namco's Capsule stores in Diver City Tokyo, Ikebukkuro and Yokohama World Porters are all massive.

My set three has shipped from Japan and arrived in Cali so maybe this week...
Well, I am based in New York and I just received mine. An amusing tidbit from the customs declaration - looks like the item originated from the Chugoku region of Japan.

(Yes, that's a little bit of a linguistics joke - the kanji characters for Chugoku (中国) is literally the same as the kanji characters for China (中国), so, eh, they decided that the item was manufactured somewhere between Yamaguchi and Okayama by Uniqlo? Although modern Japanese also refer to the region as the Sanin/Sanyo region, or 山陰/山陽地方...so that one falls apart upon closer examination)

Anyways, here’s a quick teaser…more tomorrow.

Oh, I actually don't need those gachapon balls as they took up a whole lot of space...

The nice thing is that they are individually labeled according to the contents.

IMG_4544.png

The one thing that really pissed me off? You only get a single NEC Univerge RX5230 instead of a pair for clustering work...

1751289820772.png

Here's a preview of what the rack looks like - the Univerge just goes on a tray.

1751289775307.png

Mine is also missing the middle pillar, so I'll need to talk to the eBay reseller (Gachikawa) about getting one...which might also involve me buying more Gacha (wow that semi-suck)

1751296942011.png

So yeah, more in--depth look at the series later.

Okay, so a little more on that PNE3 set - as I mentioned, the center pillar was missing from one of the bags, so I would advise strongly on double checking and contact the reseller if that's indeed the case (note that the last 2 balls I unpacked only came with 5 legs, and it's missing an extra middle one.

1751853419406.png

Here's a closer look of the "damage". Since I ordered an extra set right after receiving this one, the vendor contacted Tarlin to supply the extra missing leg - I was told that they might simply send me an extra Gacha ball to make good on it, and the vendor will just ship it with the next set.
So which ball did I ask for?

1751853287808.png

Ball 2 (the NEC Univerge IX-R2530) - hopefully I'll receive an extra one to have a clustered set?

1751853617405.png

Oh yeah, the router is not exactly secured to its base, so it comes off pretty easily...

1751853931629.png

What about the other stuff in the balls? Well, here's the APC/Schneider Electric SmartUPS 1500 RM2U...which isn't that detailed.

1751854145561.png

It also had some rather odd design choices, like...it doesn't have power outlets (so you can hang your PDUs or servers off it) and its one power cable is directly connected to the chassis. I don't remember my RM2U configured like that at all...so what exactly is it protecting?

1751854252232.png

And now, we have the F5 BigIP r12900-ds. That one actually looks pretty good...

Next up, the Netapp AFF A70. I have some choice words about that one. Not happy words...

I suspect my feelings on it will align with yours. I built mine this morning - I really feel the quality of set 3 is far below the two previous sets.

However I will say the APC model has 3 additional holes which will suit the black power cables. I've highlighted in red from your photo:

Thinking about it, at this point I would really like to get some connector plates to join the racks - there are already holes in the top panels and pins in the bottom panels that could be used for this.

Well, it's not that I have a problem with the quality of the gachas per-se, it's that they don't pay attention to the details and drives a guy like me up the wall. For example, here's a recent 600 Yen blind box that I picked up (It's Re-ment's Petit Sample Italian Trattoria...this being the Bagna Cauda). For a 600 Yen display it does a great job showing off the typical Japanese trait of attention to detail - the molding isn't great, but it's the addition of a candle under the ramekin or the molded olive oil on the caprese that really made it extra special...

1752091163094.png

Let's contrast that to, say, the Netapp AFF A70 on PNE3 - here's a diagram of its dual controllers on the chassis straight from the source, and how to wire it up....

1752091397131.png
And here's the back of the A70.

1752091430691.png

Note that only the bottom 2 power receptacles in the middle have the provisions for the plug, and there's only one network port in the entire chassis, so you can't even do an internal cluster setup, nor can you do something like wire it in clustered mode to a PowerEdge R760 (which would be useful for illustrative or teaching purposes). For an IT guy, it's sloppy (I'll probably need to use some yellow putty and some rubber band (or maybe using a bunch of small breadboard jumper cables and a mini drill) to simulate an 40GbE HA cable pair between the A and B side just so it won't trigger my OCD...), although the fact that the left side ports are so close to the edge makes me think it’s a misprint.

1752091905852.png

There is an anti-murphy measure preventing the chassis from being installed upside down, and it's possible to display the filer without the face plate (although it does make it much easier to drop the server off the rails as there are no locking mechanism in the back....)

1752091825797.png

The faceplate does require some careful sticker application.

As for the APC SmartUPS, well, it's...okay. One of the things that I like is the removable faceplate...although...

1752099129246.png
It really should have a removable battery just to complete the illusion.

Oh well, this might sell, although I think PNE2 is more of a high water mark in the series. This one? I would say it's "less good".

Considering that I have a bigger discretionary Lego budget than a homelab hardware budget (mostly constrained by noise, heat and circuit amperage in my home, and also because there really isn't that much home friendly equipment thats not just either constantly rehashed "here's yet another N100/300 1U box with a bunch of Intel NICs and a few NVMe slots from .cn or whatever Minisforum is cooking up this month")...yeah, definitely playing with Legos. And scale models. And food models. And trains. And a ton of vintage computers. And who else what else my wife brings home from the local home gardening center…

So yeah, just got my replacement parts from Gachikawa along with an apology letter from Tarlin regarding the missing parts...

IMG_5188.png

So yeah, the rack is complete. That being said, the second set of PNES3 came without the gacha balls, although from what I see, the quality control "seems" to be better.

1753585496253.png

Yeah, and now, just need to make sure that the new physical security patches installed are working...

1753585567481.png

(And yes, that's Anya Forger holding a Tomix Little Armory LAL05 Nipako p285 (really a Fabrique Nationale P90TR)...definitely very on-brand for her, and it was only $9 at the local Book-Off)

...more on the NiTo industries server enclosure...next. But first...

1753585767563.png

...yet another Japanese project to slap together.
