So I've installed ESXi 6.5 into my server and made a VM for my windows 2016 domain server. Everything seemed to have gone well and the domain was promoted. When I tried to join the the domain with a client it couldn't find the domain so still with the client I did an nslookup to the domain only to find that the DNS was pointing to my external ISP IP. When I'm in the server and I run an nslookup it points to the correct ip of 192.168.10.20.

Server info:
Windows 2016
ip = 192.168.10.20
Netmask = 255.255.255.0
gateway 192.168.10.2
DNS=127.0.0.1

Does anyone have any idea why this is happening?

I assume your clients are getting their DNS settings from a DHCP server somewhere, likely on your router...? You'll likely either need to disable the DHCP server you're currently using and set up a new one, or modify the scope options to point at your domain controller instead of your ISP.

Thanks! You're quite right! I realized what I did wrong after I post it this question here. I'll have to delegate the DHCP to the server or just change the DNS from the router to reflect the new server.
