Wanted to get perspective on this. If so, don't mind ebayin 6gbps stuff but won't buy 3g and won't buy new 6g.

Yeah dude did you see how cheap the hba-only 71605's are? like 350 wholesale with 16 ports!! Good bit more for the raid version, like $200 more for 71605e and the maxcache is expensive! oh snap they have a 24 port model too! Can you imagine if you had 11 slots of pci-e 3.0 with ( 24 * 11 ) samsung 840 pro's that would be one helluva DW box!

Now you know you can set LSI cards to run JBOD and RAID at the same time ;) megaSCU.

Likewise the PMC sierra cards support JBOD and raid at the same time.

sorry to link to competing site:

600K iops for $350-400 street price!

I don't get wholesale prices, so that Adaptec 71605 looks like a $650 card to me. Even so, with 16 ports and PCIe3, it could be an LSI-9202 killer. I'd love to test one. Actually, it's the 71685 for me - external SAS ports.

dba,
take care of the difference. There is a 71605 and a 71605E:

with regards to performance: The Adaptecs can't cope with 24 fast drives.
1) Streaming perf is limited by the PCI x8 connect,
2) with random I/O the ROC and driver is overwhelmed and crash regularly.
3) For HDs they are excellent.

my 2 cents,
Andreas

I find this hard to believe since hp has been using the PMC sierra for a long time and the p420 is solid. I'd give it a shot - it could be the operating system or other environmental issues. REMEMBER these cards need next-gen cooling, ideally active dual fan or heat-pump. the stock cooling with G6/g7 or 11th gen (r610 gen) are not sufficient in many cases. The entire card uses 14 watts. the cpu maybe 10-12 watts, but it is not easy to cool it! They need pure copper or heat pump technology.

I guarantee you, if you run the cards hot, they will clock down and destabilize.

The 9260 could run pretty much open-air in a desktop, the 9266/9271/P420/71605 - no dice!!
