Why does the Supermicro SC747 case have different middle and lower 92mm PWM Fans?

Supermicro CS747 case has 4 fans in middle area (2 for CPU and 2 for GPU).

CPU: this is the FAN-0114L4 model:

Dimension (mm): 92x92x38
Rated current (A): 1.10
Fan speed (RPM): 5,000
Air flow (CFM): 109.7
Static pressure (in.H20): 0.60
Noise (dBA): 50.0

In the GPU area below, there are two more middle fans, but these are of a different, more powerful model, the FAN-0138L4:

Dimension (mm): 92x92x38
Rated current (A): 2.24
Fan speed (RPM): 7,500
Air flow (CFM): 155
Static pressure (in.H20): 1.31
Noise (dBA): 60.0

Questions:

  1. Why couldn't they have installed the more powerful FAN-0138L4 model in the CPU area from the factory? Processors now have quite high TDP, and this parameter is increasing. Also, there are RAM modules in the CPU area that also need to be cooled effectively. With the same fan dimensions, it would be possible to achieve +50 CFM.
  2. Is this a cost-saving approach, or is it an engineering feature to reducing the electrical load on the motherboard? I'm referring to the fact that the more powerful FAN-0138L4 have a rated current of 2.24 A versus 1.10 A.
  3. If I have spare FAN-0138L4s, can I replace the weaker FAN-0114L4s with FAN-0138L4 without any negative consequences?? MB: Supermicro H12SSL

The only negative impact I'm concerned about is possible damage to the motherboard (H12SSL) due to the increased load. Issues such as noise and power costs don't bother me.

even if you have 2 500w cpus, 4 " low powe" 300W gpus + 8 drives is gonna be more. Theres also a lot more stuff like the backplane in its way so it makes sense for those to be stronger fans.

I don't know if someone modified mine after the fact though it was new in the shipping box, but I got a 747 with 3 of those fast fans, in the bottom 3 slots. But keep in mind you have to budget for up to 50W per fan now... Not sure if youre on 120v

I like the 747 chassis...I don't like Supermicro's decision to use 92mm (loud) fans for a workstation chassis.

4x92mm = can easily fit 3x120mm (with room for wires).

They could have easily done (what I did to my 847s):



Much more cooling, much less noise.

What do I know...

because it is designed for forced airflow through passive gpus (no fans of their own) and those heatsinks are dense.

These are Delta 120mmx38mm fans (heavy duty, each weighs like a pound or so...). They have much higher static pressure than Supermicro fans and can push more air through narrow things, with less noise.

edit: These are used a lot in Intel, Dell, Nvidia, Gigabyte workstation chassis. Except Supermicro...

I was replying to OP not you ... but yes... there are better static fans almost always. The 92's cant fit in a 2u, so its not like they are trying to minimize fan skus across their lines.

And I prefer the acoustics of 120mm over 92 and smaller.

But the reason the lower fans are more beefy is for passive airflow gpus

Are there other towers that are sold standalone with hot swap 120mm fans? The main reason people told me they liked these before they stopped selling empty chassis was that they were the only ones that sold them barebones. I don’t think gigabyte or Intel ever did, and dell is dell. Not sure about others.

Hotswap + 120mm? The only systems i have Seen with such a Combination were 4socket + a Ton of RAM Slots for scale up DB Servers...
Intel Had Chassis (rackmount and 5u towers) but These sucked for third Party Mainboards (PSU cable lengths, 6pin fans)

I am planning to mod my 846 chassis with 120mm fans, and I've used OK "non-enterprise" ones in other mod projects, but I'd rather use something more designed to handle 24/7 for many years.

Delta 1212SHE PWM. But be warned, there’s like a hundred different variations of Delta models.

Just look carefully, to make sure it has 4 wires and a standard fan connector.

While that looks "ok", a lot of these sellers on Amazon send you wrong models/parts.

This is an example of a "good" seller with clearly marked/shown model:

And it's a from a reliable seller (no affiliation) that is willing to negotiate for quantities, and has reasonable prices.


This particular one seems to have a fairly short cable length, so...meh. Keep looking!

Edit: Damn! I just realized these things got expensive!! I bought a boatload of these, brand new, just a few years ago for ~$7/ea shipped.
