Can someone advise which of these is more powerful? And by how much?

(I checked out both their Passmark scores, but am interested to hear from the experts in this forum)

Option 1:
HP ProLiant DL380p Gen8
2 x Xeon e5-2890v2
192GB ECC RAM

Option 2 (desktop variant):
Intel i7-8700K
16GB RAM

I have both machines at home and is trying to decide which of these I should use as my main unRAID server and run the following apps:

- NAS
- Blue Iris
- Pi-Hole
- Plex Media Server
- Emby Media Server
- Deluge VPN
- Nextcloud

Would you go with option 1 or 2, and why?

My biggest beef with the DL380p is the noise and high power consumption. But if the DL380p is significantly faster than the i7-8700K, I'll put up with it. But if it's only a 5-10% improvement, I may just decide to go with the i7-8700K.

Your thoughts?

The only thing the 2690v2 has going for it is:
- ECC RDIMM DDR3 ram is substantially cheaper and ECC is 'more reliable' (but not needed)
- Max ram is substantially higher (768Gb vs 128gb)
- Redundant PSU option (with a battery backup this is mitigated with the 8700k)
- Has IPMI (if you have an ilo license)

8700k has every other factor going for it:
- Faster clock speed
- Substantially lower power consumption
- Faster ram
- Has Intel quick sync video (hardware acceleration for transcoding)
- Much easier to quiet (or even make silent)
- Has more flexibility to fit in different cases

You didn't include how many drives you would be using and/or what motherboard you have, but we'll assume less than 8 drives so whatever you have is sufficient to run without addon cards and you wont need 10gb networking ~ even if you need more you can add HBA easily.

Unless you need more than about 128GB of ram the 8700k is the way to go.
If you have enough streams you are transcoding the upper limits of a 2690 v2 it would be more adventageous to go with a GPU for that anyway.

Thank you both for chiming in. These are all very useful comments.

Spartacus> I plan to have 6 x 12TB HDD, and 2 x 500GB SSD for cache running on unRAID. And 10gb networking is not in the plan yet since I can't be bothered to change out my existing switch. As for the i7-8700K motherboard, it's the ASUS ROG Strix Z370-I Gaming.

68k-dude> That's what I thought! So in the end, I decided to go with the DL380p server. Be a great box to manage my media library and learn about Linux. Both boxes are more than adequate for my use, so decided to go with the ProLiant server for the fun factor.

I coveted the The HP ProLiant ML350p Gen 8 for a long time.

I eventually went with the HP Z820 with two 2680v2 .

I still use it now. I actually have 2 of them and a load of other computers.

The fun and interest factor is what drives my purchases mostly.

Good luck with the project and I hope you have lots of fun

The arse end of the planet
Server Vs Desktop, easy, use the desktop for junk use / daily driver with desktop OS. Use a server for just that, A SERVER.
Suggesting anything else suggests novices. Stop comparing chalk and cheese.
