I'm currently in the process of replacing a E5 2620 V4 that was used primarily for an unraid server.
VM usage today is minimal, but I'd like to keep that avenue open to me in the future. The server mostly serves up media and other MISC Dockers.

My motherboard failed, so I'm using this as an opportunity to upgrade board and cpu.

I think my needs could probably be met with a 7232P, but I'm looking through the SKU list to try to determine if it's worth it for my use case to consider other chips.

The CPU's I've been considering.
7232P $481
7282 $695
7302P $881

The difference between the 7232P and 7302P are well compared at STH, but I it's unclear if the 7282 provides a substantial enough improvement over the 7232P to justify the $200 premium over the 7232P.

Does anyone have any experience/feedback on if the 7282 makes sense?

Thank you for your thoughts.

We have the 7282 benchmarked. Just got stuck in an end of year publishing logjam along with the 7272.

Personally, I would go above the 7232p if possible. Cost per core is much better on a system basis.

I think the 7282 is a good option but the 7302p is what I would use. Still, you are getting ~2x the CPU for $200 more which is $25/ core.

Interesting. So if you were in my position.. You would look to buy an entire server instead of the components?
Considering that for a second.

Inventory 16 Hard disks (4x10TB, 2x8TB, 2x6TB, 7x3TB, 1x2TB) - I could consolidate to less drives, but I'd want to maintain capacity.
Current Chassis - SC846 with the SAS2 Backplane

If I kept my current Chassis, I would need to convert it to a disk shelf with one of those CSE-PTJBOD control boards.

Or - I could get a new disk shelf I suppose.

I don't have a ton that I'd need to put into the new Rack Server. 1-2 NVME, Small Graphics Card..
