When will E5 CPUs and DDR3 become cheap?

I'm looking to buy a lowpower server with >=72GB ram for homelab use. Looking at eBay prices, L56xx seems to be the way to go. When I've bought hardware earlier, a new generation has usually popped out a few weeks later, so this time I thought I'd ask in advance. Will DDR3 soon plummet to DDR2 prices? And will there soon be E5 cheap servers?

I have a feeling it will be multi years before your wish comes true.

better luck with e5-24xx series...since the Xeon D come up, it will drive down that series price

Depends on your definition of cheap. There is no way that I would really recommend 1366 to anyone at this stage.

Thank you, everyone!

Cheap: Similar to the 56xx systems on eBay.
Would 1366 be worse than 56xx?

1366 is the LGA for the 56xx.
e5-24xx uses 1356
both are tri-channel (intel tried to replace 56xx with e5-24xx)

E5 and DDR3 are cheap if you can find the deals.

IE: 400 CPU that regularly goes for 900-1110, I got 3 them. 600 for same, etc...

your definition of "cheap" and others may not be the same. It's not 1366 6 core cheap.

Checkout the Chuckleb homelab update thread, I posted some 1366 systems in there that I felt were a good bang for buck. 4 node, 192gb ram, x5650 2P <2k$.

E5 v1/v2 and DDR3 IMHO have a lot of life left, especially in consumer market.

For $140 to my door I got a complete SM L54xx w/32gb DDR2... for playing around on older hardware it's hard to beat the prices :) Even if newer, lower core, less heat/power can do the same.

I have seen new Lenovo servers that are LGA 2011 drop that low occasionally. Probably not dual proc but... a single hex and you can add a second later.
Just browse the Great deals forum to see what people find.
Back in January this gem...

Moral of the story... don't waste your money on 1366 if you can help it.

Yes, I don't need 2 processors. Only the memory. I will wait some more then. Thank you again

You do realize... you need a cpu in the socket to use the dimm slots .... right?
I can use half the DIMM slots with 1 CPU right? It looked liked the RD640 you posted had 18. I think 9 should be enough.
Over priced by a good margin IMHO.
Oki. I tried searching some more, but couldn't really find any complete system with similar amount of RAM. Is it better to buy each component seperate?

I tried comparing the CPU category on eBay (the first 100 pages it wanted to give me anyway) with the Excel document from ark.intel.com with CPU names. The cheapest ones I found were
Intel Xeon E5 2418L SR0M5 2 00GHz Quad Core CPU M183 | eBay $89.10
New HP Intel Xeon E5 2603 V3 6 Core 1 60 GHz 15MB CPU Processor P N E5 2603V3 | eBay $185.00
Intel Xeon E5 1620 SR0LC Quad Core CPU 3 60GHz M195 | eBay $200.00
Intel Xeon E5 2650L B0 ES LGA2011 Compatible with X79 i7 3820 4820K 4930K 4960X | eBay $199.00

How do you find suitable motherboard/chassis? I don't presume there's an exhaustive list like there is for the CPUs? RAM was easier since I could just search for DDR3 and order by price/GB. Is Ventura good? 8 Ventura 8GB x 8 64GB Lot PC3 10600R DDR3 1333 Regi ECC Memory D3 60MM104SV 999 | eBay Should the amount of memory modules installed always be a multiple of 3? Most of the lots on eBay seems to be 2^n for some n.

Going to 3 dimms per channel is usually a pain due to memory ranks and stuff. I'd stick with 2dimms per channel designs for 72GB.

For the 2418L -

I bet you could get this for $500-600 on a best offer: Intel R2208BB4GC Server System Socket B2 2U Rack 750W DDR3 ECC New | eBay comes with 8x 2.5" hot swap but get 2 CPU and have 12 dimm slots to work with.

Here's another option if you want HP and a tower: HP Proliant ML350E G8 Server Tower E5 2403 686770 S01 Original Box Warranty 886112794019 | eBay comes wit a 2403 which I'd sell for that 2418L

There are many other options, but those were just some. No reason not to get the E5-x600 except it costs more.

@doop , it is best list a ball park budget.
$500 to $1000, $1000 to $1500
rack mount or not , noisy vs less noisy

For comparison , from my old notes

E5-1428L idle at 34w , load at 88w
Cinebench R15 451cb

Dual E5-2418L Cinebench 657cb

E5-2403 Cinebench 236cb

Dual E5-2430L Cinebench 1478cb

Supermicro single E5-1607 4c/4t , 1 disk
WS12r2 idle at 34w , Prime95 load at 113-122w
Cinebench R15 382cb

Thank you, the notes are very helpful

$500 to $1000, closer to $500
I don't have a rack - I hoped I could just put a rack server on it's side :p
Less noisy
Min. 64GB memory, diminishing returns over 100GB

E5-L2418's for $89/each - Intel Xeon E5 2418L SR0M5 2 00GHz Quad Core CPU M183 | eBayIntel Xeon E5 2418L SR0M5 2 00GHz Quad Core CPU M183 | eBay

On the plus it's below $100 now, however I'm guessing it will be awhile yet before the 6+ core chips are down to under $100/each. Remember, the first gen E5-24xx chips didn't ship till May 12th 2012 so any of the large leasing groups running 3yr leases are just coming up...so we may see an influx of parts available over the next few months. The other wrinkle is the E5-15xx SOC boards which while not originally designed to displace the secondary market, may in some scenarios resulting in lower demand of the first-gen E5 parts.
