The label on the top of the drive says HUH728080AL4200 but the drive identifies itself as a HUH72808CLAR8000. The physical appearance of the drive is also slightly different from the other HUH728080AL4200 drives I have. The top is polished aluminum with a white label covering about 1/2 the drive but the tops of my HUH728080AL4200 drives are entirely white.

The drive says it's an 8TB 7200RPM drive with 4kn sectors so specs match a HUH728080AL4200. Performance matches my other HUH728080AL4200 drives.

Oddly, when I received the drive it had the write cache disabled. Easily fixed, though with...

Code:
sdparm --save --set WCE /dev/sdar
Custom build?

Your drive is most probably from a EMC VNX storage (old name CLARiiON storage). I also bought some SAS drives in the past and had the same "CLAR" text in the model name. I crosschecked the firmware versions at that time and they were indeed the EMC model.

Firmware is custom for sure in rest the label is normal to be different to have identification data from EMC in case you need to order spare parts. My drives are still working after 5-6 years so you also should be fine with them.

Thanks for the info, especially your report that you suffered no ill effects.

Before using them with some important data I suggest to run a sg_format and a smart long test. Check the smart values after this. If it looks OK drives are good for use. EMC firmware is stable and no issues seen there.

Is it possible to flash them with stock firmware? My drives are H5H72808CLAR8000 but say HUH728080AL4205 on the label. They were impossible for me to detect in any enclosures except one by supermicro, and they're "Unsupported for RAID configuration" by my Microsemi Storage Manager software for some odd reason.

You can flash it with stock firmware once you find it. Your variant is the most secure one
He8.PNG
Unsupported by RAID controllers because of non 512bps sector size or hdd is in SED locked state. Plug it into HBA or JBOD friendly RAID controller and look into drive current state.

You don't have any idea where to find the firmwares, do you? I went to WD website, but they don't even list He8s in support anymore. Apparently they're off their radar.

I do like these drives...
