Hello,

I'm looking for an unmanaged cheap switch that has at least 2x10Gbit RJ45 (more are always welcome) and at least 2 2.5Gbit RJ45 ports.

No need for PoE or anything particular, this is just so my two home servers can talk to each other, and the 2.5Gbit is going to be the switch's WAN port plugged into the router.

I can't find much for less 100€ used, and the only new that I can find are yuanley for 110€ for 4x 2.5G ports or 140€ for 8x 2.5G ports.

I don't know how reliable this one is, it looks perfect but a bit over my budget. I'd like for something under 100€ after shipping.

Any offers are welcome

Unfortunately this niche he's after is not a common product as RJ45 simply eats too much power.
my brother in satan, he can use DAC or SFP to copper ;)

If you have only two 10G hosts I would just wire them directly to each other and use some second ethernet port to access the rest of your LAN/internet, makes the hardware much easier to find.

I thought there were a bunch of these on Aliexpress. Pretty sure they were also "Smart Managed", possibly completely unmanaged.

What stops me is the fact that there is currently no OpenWRT for any of these "Smart" Managed Switches with a combination of 10gbps and 2.5gbps. Possibly there are some Exceptions, but I'm not aware of any personally.

The 10G are sfp+ though.

I have 2 keeplink switches and they are running fine. Mine are the single 10G sfp+ with 8 2.5G though.

Yep, adding a dual port 10GBase-T nic is dirt cheap these days. In fact, this is how I would do it vs these questionable switches. Just a bunch of point to points or just bridge the two ports and daisy-chain like the old Farallon 'hubless' nics from the 10Mb days.

thanks for your input everyone. I thought the SFP to copper were too expensive and also they'd heat up and eat up too much energy anyway

They do cost enough to make your budget difficult, and they benefit from some external airflow in a fanless switch, but the power is going to be used somewhere if you're running 10GBaseT, either in an SFP module or inside the switch. You really just want to avoid 10GBaseT all together if possible (I definitely know that's not always an option,) go for SFP+/SFP28 NICs and DACs or fiber for lower power consumption and heat.

Thanks for your reply. I looked it up and it would be more expensive actually. I can't find SFP+ cables cheaper than 10-15€ a piece, and the transceivers are around 50 a pop.

That makes the budget of 140€ before a switch. Unless somebody has something to sell. I think I'll take the heat hit of the 10GBaseT

If by "SFP+ cables" you mean DACs, those don't need transceivers, but they're limited to around 3M length and they do not bend well. I don't know what the used market is like where you are but 10G optical transceivers are like $8 on US ebay and new fiber patch cables are generally cheap, you need a NIC that supports them, though, and I don't know if your 10GBaseT ports are built into the motherboard or on a separate NIC that you could replace.

You should really consider directly wiring the two 10G hosts directly to each other and just saving all the switch cost and two ports worth of heat and power.

The heat is not that bad. I have 2 of those switches (each has 1 sfp+). I connect them together via rj45 because that is what my apartment has thus each needs a transceiver.

One of them is inside my bestå tv cabinet along with my opnsense router and pi3. The door is cracked open so the opnsense ssd would not overheat :p

So far the switch has been working fine for a year.

I also have CAT6 wired in my walls and so I run several 10GBaseT transceivers, I probably killed one from heat (I haven't actually tested it since I swapped it,) running in a fanless switch with no external airflow at the top of a sealed coat closet, since then I have added some silent fans with 3D printed adapters and replaced several of my original 30M max cable length modules with the newer, cooler-running 80M or 100M chipset type and have had no problems. I suggest not buying those 30M parts at all these days.

I understand the confusion I have ethernet NICs built into the motherboard. My PCIe slots are all used up... So I don't know if I could add an additional NIC with SFP+ ports, but in that case I'll just get DAC cables I understand what you mean

Sounds like you're probably stuck with 10GBaseT, a switch with SFP+ ports and two 80M transceivers will probably be cheaper than a switch with built-in 10GBaseT ports if you also need 2.5GBaseT ports, since older/cheaper (but probably hotter and less efficient) 10G switches would only have 1G/10G ports.

The energy thing is a myth--on any type of equipment you can get far cheaper than a more expensive 'efficient' one. It's a capEx vs opEx financial decision that almost always favors opEx since you can turn the equipment off for opEx to go to zero--capEx is money long gone...
