I am going to read more carefully, but this is my situation

I bought a 7820 dual processor dell set up. It has silver 4110 in it.

Knowing nothing, I purchased a pair of 8252c processors. Obviously the machine wouldn't start. I would love to use these 240w processors, but the questions are:

With a 950w power supply, am I hitting the wall?
Does this motherboard require a physical mod?
Am I missing anything?

You'll need to use Rollo's mod. But I would be curious about performance of 240W processors in dual configuration on the T7820. Those tiny stock Dell heatsinks are not very effective coolers. I question whether even 205W processors can be effectively cooled by them. Maybe if you used >10 W/m/K paste and set the base CPU fan speed to 100%. But if you perform the mod you could at least do single processor with the larger heat sink.

Anyone know if you could use a 3175X on a T7820 after applying the mod? That could be more worth it.

I question whether even 205W processors
dell offers 2 heatsink parts (one low grade only up to 120W or something, and another one for 160W)
The 160W heatsink has more copper and is substantially heavier (its capable of keeping 205W cpu's cool enough - not full 24x7 load, but typical load). The 120W isn't capable, even if you have fans with 7k rpm blowing it.

(there is another aio one, but price wise it makes no sense; and best part no documentation from dell on the part numbers - and they look about the same -- same for poweredge servers hah.)

some run 2x 8251C on 7920T. no way with stock coolers, they applied custom water.

works with modd but the BIOS supports no overclocking and XTU can not access required registers.
So it would at least behave consistent with its 'stock' specifications, yes? I was an early adopter of the 3175X on the Dominus, and played with overclocking for a while on a custom loop before just deciding to go stock and was still perfectly happy.

I agree, no way stocks can keep 240W cool under load.

This is the top solution from dell for t7920 (aio's) but i doubt they can cool down 250W on full load - more like mixed load.
(but they are so rare, that i even struggle to find any link to them - they might as well not exist - they come with "120"mm rads and fast fan)

240W(@25C) ? doubt that realy.
specialy the second cooler can never get 25C degree air temp input, he gets hot air from first socket.

Yea, I agree. seems like they are rating it on hopes and dreams

Looked into the Dynatron aios, but there just isn't enough room.... its close, but not close enough to roll the dice on fabrication.

If you are in air conditioned environment, and fan goes 9000rpm as said in spec, i could see it.


As i recall this might be what they offered from dell; add high performance fans that go 7-9k rpm you should be able to deal with 250W easily.

the fans on the dynatron spin much higher than that, but the radiator won't fit

Thanks @RolloZ170 and @PandaChan for Dell T7920 mod guide and pictures.

Using 1P 8259CL now with good temp (full load 68C-75C with room ambient temp ~33C, 20% CPU fan BIOS setting).
Will add another one later on and see how the temps go.


p/s: Not mention in the guide - is the step to disable the case-intrusion sensor on the top right corner of the board with a jumper.

sorry i never got one for modifying and some owner couldn't find access to the VRMs Bus.
there are some (unpopulated)headers, soldering is required to that or directly to some SMD resistors at the VRM controller.
but i know none who have done that so far.

update:
looks like this is solved.
VPP_I2C1 10 pin header:
Pin1 I2C8SCL
Pin2 I2C8SDA
Pin3 Ground
"MCP2221a_iccmax_FF.exe -PXE1610C 5A 5C"

its not rocket science. find the SMD resistors in line of the I2C bus of the PXE1610C, solder(or use test pins)
the cables to connect the (Adafruit)MCP2221a device.

What bios are you running? Have you experimented with various versions to test performance changes from microcode?
