Success! Dell T7920 DUAL 8259CL Thank you @RolloZ170

NOTABLE STATS:
  1. Cinebench r23: 43334 (vs 23732 for single socket)
  2. Intel MLC: 221267.7 (ALL Reads)
  3. CPU-Z Multi: 22701
  4. Geekbench 6 Multi: 11314
  5. Full load total system power draw ~600W (1400W PSU)

My experience:

This socket is especially difficult to get installed correctly, at least for me, and the only thing that worked was to do one full turn at a time for screws 1 then 2 until thumb tight, then switch to one full turn at a time for 3 then 4, then finally do a torque tighten in the factory order (1,2,3,4). Otherwise there was no video or BIOS POST.

If I used the last known full speed BIOS, it would flash 3 orange 5 white which is a "MEM" error. However other boards give a similar error when the CPU is not supported. I ended up swapping back to the silver and updating to a known working version (2.34), and then to the latest (2.9.0) with no performance hit. There was a performance hit going from early bios to scalable 2 support.

While I agree that the thermal design of the tower is suspect, when operating in a fall temp garage the fans ramp up to keep the clocks stable at full multiplier even after 10 minutes of Cinebench or other stress tests. I plan to do some cooling mods, but for now will just dedicate the back (CPU1) socket to AVX512 and the front to other stuff.

Has anyone tried this with an X11SPW-TF or X11DDW-NT? I currently have X11SPW-TFs and would like to get a uniform setup going. As it is (tested for the sake of it) with the latest supermicro BIOS I can get to post code 70 with the 8259cl CPU installed. Admitting my ignorance here, but this is out my current skill set. That said, I have 2 other boards I'm willing to test on once I get them flashed to supermicro BIOS (they're the nutanix boards....)

there is a known issue with 8273CL and late microcodes. i guess this applies to your board with 8259CL too.
try to use the earliest BIOS with 2nd gen support, or swap microcode of latest BIOS with old 0x0500001C one e.g.

Thanks so much @RolloZ170 for this treasure trove of info on the VRM mod. I'd like to setup dual Platinum 8252C CPUs in a X11-DP series. Can anyone give advice on cooling systems that would work well for this?

don't work aircooled if the 2nd CPU gets hot air of the first. watercooling is best.

Understood but I am having trouble finding an LGA3647 AIO cooler that would work for dual socket. Wondering if you or anyone else has some tips here?

custom. or check Alphacool and dynatron, aliexpress, amazon ("dual 3647 watercooler")
or take a X11DP with CPUs not on a row...
or take coolers 90 degree rotated, hot air out ASAP, excluses a server chassis of course.

What bios are you running? Have you experimented with various versions to test performance changes from microcode?
BIOS version 2.42.0

Just got my another 8259CL. Apparently the second CPU is always +10~15C hotter.

The machine came with 2 x 16GB 2666MT. Wiki says the CPU support is 2666, but some other sites mention 2933.

Curious whether 2933MT works on 8259CL. Planning to get 2933 hoping it could attain 2933...

I am a newbie and looking for P920 step by step. I have read 24 pages, but don't find out the one who is doing with Lenovo P920. What material should I buy for beginning? Thanks a lot!

Just run computer with mp2955a, open bios configuration and try connect again. Without power and CPU, vrm not running.

and we have successfully modified a Lenovo P920 motherboard:
controllers are PXE1610C
addresses are 60/62(7bit) same like Dell.
I2C header is PJ1100 Pinout:
[1] SCL
(2) SDA
(3) Ground (you can use any other GND or LAN plug shield)
IMG_4200_55.jpg
you need Adafruit MCP2221a and some jumper cables
i made a c# app for automatic programming(only for MCP2221a). download here
there is a readme inside. read it.
