    Hi!

I am just looking for the best solution to assign NICs to the different "jobs" in VMWare. Best practice seems to be:

    - 2 x 1-10GbE for the Management (nic teamed)
    - 2 x 10GbE for the vMotion (nic teamed)
    - 2 x 10GbE for the storage iSCSI
    - 2 x 10GbE for the VM traffic (nic teamed)

    ...but: I have only 4-6 10 GbE-ports in my server-systems (2x onboard, 2x2 Intel DA2) and no more free PCIe-ports

    What would you do?
    - Share Management and vMotion-uplinks?
    - Share Management and VM.traffic?
    - Buy DA4-cards to get 8 ports?
    - Remove Boot-Raid (and controller) and add 2x 10 GbE

I do only use a "Standard-license" - so Distributed vSwitch is not an option...

    Thank you for your help!

management should work just fine on 1gig.
I think vmotion is often put on 1 gig nics as well

if you are limited to 6 port then i would do the following:

    2 x 10gb for iscsi
    2 x 10gb for vmotion
    2 x 10gb for vm traffic + management

That totally depends on what kind of concurrent traffic you have.

But in general I'd second @azev 's setup. You won't need 10g for mgmt at all, but you'll want it for vm traffic (totally depending on use case but usually its nice)

    Hi!

I tried some things and here my final thoughts:
Management-NIC on 1Gbps is not an option for me. There is one BIG problem: restores!
Backups are running with direct-san-access through VEEAM, but restores are using the management interface.

--> 10 Gbps for management is important for me.
    My current favourite config is:

    4-nic-setup:
    2x iSCSI
    2x "rest"

    6-nic-setup:
    2x iSCSI
    2x Management
    2x VM-traffic
