Hi! I've been lurking for a few years, though now I've got to the point of needing some help myself.
I got an DELL SC200 with the basic SAS2 6Gbit Controllers from work and I'm having kind of a speed issue with it. My hardware is an HP DL360p G8 with dual E5-2670 v2 CPUs, 208GB DDR3L 1600MHz RAM and an LSI 9206-16e HBA, running Proxmox 9.1.5 Kernel 6.17.
The HBA was previously used in a DELL SC8000 (relabeled DELL R720). To get it recognized in my HP server, I needed to flash the firmware. Now the two SAS2308 chips on that card are running MPTFW-20.00.07.00-IT. So far so good. All the disks get recognized on my Server and the read speeds are decent. Well around 192MB/s on HDD. The write speeds however are terrible! With a simple DD if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sdaa I only get around 30-35MB/s.
My Disks are 12x 4TB DELL Seagate ST4000NM0025 12Gbit/s SAS drives.
To rule out the HDDs I also tested some SATA SSDs. Samsung 860 Evo 250GB. The read speeds are a tiny bit better, around 213MB/s, though still fairly slow for a SSD. But the write speeds are still only around 40MB/s. For comparison, on the integrated HP P420i (also in HBA Mode) I get like 500MB/s read and 250MB/s write with that SSD.
My goal was it to run ZFS on it. But the write performance is of course also terrible with like 60MB/s.
To rule out the hardware, I also tested the SC200 on a completely separate Supermicro Server with Dual E5-2690 v4 CPUs. And it's exactly the same behaviour, this time with Proxmox 8 and Kernel 6.8.
The LSIutil also shows the shelf is connected with 4x 6Gbit/s links via 1 SAS Cable (to rule out any problems I didn't use multipath and I also changed the cable and tried pretty much all ports combinations).
Is there any setting I'm missing in the controller firmware? Or is my diskshelf maybe defective?
I also made a serial cable for the self like shown in the thread:
Fun with an MD1200/MD1220 & SC200/SC220
Both Controllers in the SC200 are running Firmware 1.03 and I also tried only running one single controller instead of two.
I hope someone has an Idea, of what could be wrong with my setup.
