Transferring video footage (4GB files) on Windows from USB to my desktop I noticed a performance difference that seems odd.

Background:
  • Win10 \ 5900x \ 32GB \ Optane Boot\OS\App drive
  • I transferred part of my video footage to one drive and part to the other once completed. (Same port, same memory card, etc...)
  • Both SSD and NVME are used for storage only. (No VMs, Apps, etc, running from them)
  • The faster transfer occurred after the first, once the drive was warm -- but switching back to SSD, it did not go >125.

  • Transferring to 400GB SSD (S3610) I was maxed out at 125MB\s.
  • Transfering to 1TB NVME (P4510) I was maxed out at 165MB\s

What could possibly cause this?

Were both drives 512 format? What was the USB formatted as? Same file system on both destination drives? How was the NVME connected - U.2, pcie slot?

My first guess - drive format and file system.
Second guess - SATA overhead / DMA for NVME.
