Do these exist? Because without it I'm forced to buy a motherboard with it onbard which in the x399 platform REALLY limits my options.

I'm not aware of any that have the new style connector, but the new connector isn't required to get gen 2 speeds.

It is required though if your case has a front panel USB type C connector that requires the new header like my new CaseLabs SMA8.

Yup, you really limited your options. If be inclined to just run the cable from the back, myself. ;-)

thunderbolt 3 add on card? like 50$
Have you found one for general use on a range of motherboards?
My googling suggest Thunderbolt 3 add-on cards are specific to expensive, recent motherboards.

I'd love to be wrong on this :)

I know of:

- Silverstone SST-ECU05
- Sonnet Allegro USB-C

Or are you looking for ones with an internal header as opposed to USB-C?

Oh, you thought you were the first person in four months to realize that USB cards exist. If you'd read the rest of the thread you'd see that he was actually looking for a card with the new "gen2" internal header.
