Upgrade MZ32-AR0 rev1 to rev 3 in 2025

I bought a MZ32-AR0 rev 1 (from tugm after seemingly many positive experiences reported here) and a 7573X. He forgot to flash it to rev 3. I am aware of this post. The BMC gives the following firmware version report:

and the detected CPU is 7282 (!)

Can anyone comment on their experience with this upgrade? It seems all the newest BIOS versions are much too new. Trying to upgrade by loading the rev 3 latest BIOS (RBU) over the BMC fails. He sent me a version to try which is R28 / M18.

It seems like I need a 7002 processor to do the upgrade from the running machine. I don't have this option because... I'm a total N00b. Am I missing something about what to upload through the BMC? Is windows necessary? I haven't used it in over a decade.

Does anyone know what the primary problem is? Is it the BMC? Or what are the steps to do this? Is it possible without buying a 7002 processor I don't need?

if your board has a small BIOS chip for only one BIOS (not Rome+Milan)
you need a single RBU file, e.g. Milan.RBU

ten times flashing that bios and no joy. I think it would be a 32MB one though because that is what he sent me. Is the general understanding that the older BMCs are unreliable for doing this flash? If I want to go down that road I will need a 7002 cpu right?

yes, to sort out a defective 7003

return the board and get a working one.

The milan. The dual I did a couple of times too.

Actually upon asking him this, he claims that he did do it, but that possibly the bios reset after removing the battery for so long. Not sure. He is offering to replace the board or send a 7002 cpu.

haha, the cmos battery holds some SRAM and rtc-clock, but NOR flash memory is non-volatile.

yes not really confidence-inspiring. Tempted to take it to a shop here and have it flashed directly. If anyone has a good recommendation for a Berlin supplier of server equipment?

yes yes the Milan.RBU i tried at least 10 times. Someone in that post said it was necessary to retry.

and also tried the 32mb image.RBU from the RBU folder ?
if same error you need update BMC firmware first as mentioned the other thread.

Yes but you contradict that statement don't you here? I understood from your saying that 'it is not the BMC' that an old enough ROM should 'just work'. So if I definitely need a new BMC then I definitely need a 7002 CPU to do it, correct?

you don't need a new BMC, just update to latest Firmware, the new FW supports 7003.
btw: sure your EPYC 7573X is in working condition and not Vendor locked ?

no i was getting an error every time.

Well I guess he either didn't or somehow the whole system reset to its factory setup afterwards?

But now I see that the BMC can be flashed from the BMC. I thought that was excluded.

no there are no backup's to reflash (new supermicro have this)
