Yes you can, just download PCGNW232 to drive
yes I updated it, much better now . it seems like we can't be sure which firmware will actually work even if it works. because it made the HDD so slow even when the speeds were fine in benchmark

New firmware obtained from WDC/HGST/Sandisk after multiple support calls:

=== START OF INFORMATION SECTION ===
Vendor: WDC
Product: WUSTR1515ASS201

@napalm_atx Thank you for your help and contribution to this forum as well as for the firmware repository you provide to all.

I have 5x WUH721818ALE6L4 (MFD AUG-2021) with factory firmware PCGNW232.
I purchased a sealed factory recertified WUH721818ALE6L4 (MFD SEP-2023) which arrived with factory firmware PCGNW870.

As per your previous posts, I succesfully upgraded the firmware of the older 5 ones to PCGNW870 to match with the one of the latest one I got.

Having seen the post from @x7007 who had issues after upgrading PCGNW870, I have some questions:

1) I see there are 3 firmwares available, PCGNW870, PCGAW870 and PCGAW270. The later is the one provided in the WD website. Do you happen to know is the latest one?

2) Do you happen to know what may be the differences between each firmware?

3) Per my understanding, some firmware revisions may also have to do with the HDD PCB components or EEPROM.
So if a HDD arrives with factory firmware PCGNxxxx, then a PCGAxxxx, cannot/should not be installed as it may brick the hard drive, correct?
But this theory doesn't justify the PCGAW870 vs PCGAW270, unless 270 and 870 could also have another functional difference (if they have)...

Also, @x7007 do you happen to use those drives in a Synology NAS? I know that Synology may have some issues with newer firmware revisions for the HGST/WDC Ultrastar drives:

Disclaimer from Synology for some models and WDC/HGST compatibility of 14+TB HDDs:

  • To ensure compatibility, the hibernation function is disabled on this drive.
  • Please note that the HDD/SSD firmware may be updated or modified by its manufacturer without prior notice. Synology can only ensure that the firmware listed is compatible with Synology products.

PCGNW870 and PCGAW870 is latest fw, GA is for another selling channel, if you try to load GA fw to GN drive nothing will happen, drive just will not accept different fw

Excellent, thank you for the fast response. I will leave them to PCGNW870 then.

Also I got some older HC530 WUH721414ALE6L4 which I believe are on LDGNW channel (MFD early 2021).

May I take it that the latest revision for this channel is LDGNW400, LDGNW2L0, or LDGNW240?

Many thanks for your help.

Anyone have or know where I can find the none OEM firmware for the Dell DGTT2 HGST HUSMR1616ASS200? The none OEM variants support T10 PI but dell has removed the feature from their firmware.

EDIT : Someone came through for me Thankyou.

Does anyone have, or can get me the Netapp NE02 firmware for the

E-X4132AHUH721212AL520412TBNE02

Have been running 2 of these in a Broadcom (lsi) array with other drives for over a year and
I’m starting to have issues with these drives as detailed here.

Have already returned one drive, trying to avoid returning the second one if it’s just a firmware fix.
I have tried flashing the latest generic firmware but it won’t take.

Hi there,
thank you @napalm_atx! This discussion made me confident in updating my WUH721818ALE6L4 with wdckit (under Linux) from PCGNW232 to PCGNW870. It seemed to work like a charm.
I have four 4 TB HGST HUS724040ALE640 that run in a software RAID. I would like to update them to the latest firmware if there is any.

Currently they run firmware MJAOA580. The only suitable file I found in the HDDguru download section is firmware MJ07B580. Is this only due to a hardware revision difference between the drives ("AOA" vs "07B") or is this some hex counting and my firmware with 'A' is newer than the one starting with '0'?
Does anyone know, if this is a meaningful update or does the number 580 mean that it is the same anyway?

Thank you for that info!
In another machine I have more drives. I would be very happy, if you could also give your opinion on those if you think an update is safe:

HGST HUH721010ALE604 currently on LHGNW384 and I found LHGNWB01 as newest. Is it compatible? I downloaded other versions, too: LHGNW9Y0, LHGNW9U0, LHGNW9G0, LHGNW92C

HGST HUH721010ALE600 currently on LHGNT384, and I found LHGNTB01 as newest. Would that work? Other firmwares I found are: LHGNT9Y0, LHGNT9U0, LHGNT9G0, LHGNT21D, LHGNT92C. For that disk I don't have the original LHGNT384 firmware as flash image, so I wouldn't have a way back.

For my HGST HUS726060ALE610 that currently has APGNT907 I found version APBDTDM0. Is it compatible?

2) Do you happen to know what may be the differences between each firmware?
I would also like to know if there’s a changelog for the firmware if anyone knows.

latest PCGAW870 seems to be a lot quieter at least.

For He10 drives B01 is latest, for HUS726060ALE610 latest is APGNTD05
Thank you very much! Does your answer mean that it these versions are not just the latest but that they are also compatible to my drives that are on such old versions? Sorry, but I want to double-check before doing the updates
