Not sure if ive seen full front scalable units this low before, but its Europe and cisco so almost no demand means low price tag :D

- Cisco C240 M5 (r740xd equivalent)
- 24sff front + 2sff rear
- only 1 heatsink + only 1 pcie cage
- VIC 1387 mlom 2x40gbe (esxi8 supported)
- sas3 card included
- dual 1080w psus

Cisco UCS C240 M5, CTO 1xHeatsink, NO Ram, 24x SFF, with Raid with MLOM

Asking is 150£/ea (125£ ex vat), my offer was accepted for 4pcs at 90£/ea ("ex.vat. export" as comment)
Expecting to see alot more of these coming, several large sellers with the exact same config getting listed about same time (but rest starting closer to 800-1000/ea).

Have not tried flashing cisco hbas, it should be this one tho " Supports RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50, 60, and JBOD mode. Supports running mixed RAID and JBOD mode."

Gen1/2 scalable and ddr4, 6254 on the official parts list.

I did not grab rails but saw same seller had for 20, i got a moving box of the netapp 2U L profiles that i use for pretty much everything :D

2front and i belive 2 rear that support nvme.

You can’t flash those Cisco 12G RAID cards as they are SAS3108 based, similar to Dell PERC H730.
A SAS3008 based HBA is available but seldom.

All gone but they might have more, they have been listing several pallets of 10 already.
(Its one of them they split up and listed after i asked, since they dont do pallets internationally)

I've never used Cisco servers before, so I'd be grateful if someone could answer a few questions for me, before I buy one of these:

Are updates available for it and if so, do I need a license, are they free, how long will they be provided?
Is there a special reason so many of them are now on the used market?
Do I need to buy an IPMI license and if so where and how much do they cost?
Are replacement parts available? For example, should I want to replace the HBA, a defective component, etc.?
Can non-Cisco components be installed? I know Dell servers allow installation of 3rd-party PCIe cards and SSDs. What about DDR4 memory?
Is this manufactured by Cisco or Dell? It was mentioned that it is "r740xd equivalent".
Do Dell components work and would I be able to flash it all to Dell firmware?

I'd really like to be sure I don't buy something I'll have problems with later ...

the rails & caddies are £££££ 600gbp for 6 rails and a few caddies with the ebay quotes for shipping, will just lay them on each other for that much money, and 3d print or just stuff in drives and let them hang loose

cpu suggestions? cheap & performy of course ;)
My first candidate is xeon 6148, they are used in so many specs that their price looks to have somewhat tanked.
20core/40thread and 80$ area.

The few other models ive looked up with a bit of cores have been quite a bit higher, but not looked over all yet.

As for rails im a bit tempted to get them myself, so pmd them if they could make me a listing of 8 rails to get a better shipping cost.
Should make it go from 312£ to about 40-60£ for shipping.

if you get a deal on rails let me know, oslo based, and vat registerd, need 6, if you need hpe rails.. I have a hundreds of KG of thoose ;)
I did try to not get ebay shipping on servers, no dice, we shop a lot from distributors in the uk, almost all our HPE comes from there, and usually overnight super cheap, but I know the deals they have vary.

I think the only HPe i got left in lab atm is a few apollo gen9 r2600/r2800 chassises without rails, but not really any top access needed for them.

They made me a listing for 8rails but forgot to enable global shipping so waiting on them to update it.

i already got grey petg sitting from making trays for old M4 units, so gone print for the M5 ones also.
But with their price for rails i figure its worth picking up 4rails for the 4x c240 M4 getting replaced before putting on finn.

If you need rails+trays he can probably make you a listing for the quantities you want combined to get ok shipping rate.

1. Updates are available and well maintained, but you need to have a Cisco account. Should be free, no need for a purchased license.
2. Cisco tried to push their „flexpod“ (Cisco servers and switches and NetApp FAS/AFF for storage) 3-5 years ago into the Small and medium business here in Europe, aggressive discounts to get market shares from Dell and HPE. Now they are ready to retire…
3. They come with a (very nice) IPMI for free
4. Replacement parts hit the market as of 2.
5. You can install 3rd party parts, but if so they do not play nice with the CIMC (that’s Ciscos name for their BMC/IPMI). But they work in general and do not spin up fans to crazy like some Dells do.
6. you can throw in 3rd party DIMM but need to make an „allow 3rd party“ setting in Bios before.
7. Manufactured by/for Cisco. OP did not mention they are build by Dell, he just says thei are kind of equivalent regarding specs and intended use to a R740. That’s true indeed.

I do run 6134 in their little C220 M5 brother as I am more in need of single core performance.
If you want to start really cheap: have a pair of 5118 and a pair of 5120 they came originally with for sale… so working pull from C220 M5

Kids, don’t try that at home with any M5.
Might be doable for a weightless SATA SSD but will definitely destroy your backplane if done with a heavy SAS (be it HDD or SSD). Been there, done that…
