U.2 to pci-e adapters

I'm looking to pick up a few enterprise NVMe SSDs, but they're in U.2 form factor and I don't use any backplanes. Are there any issues if I just picked up a passive U.2 to PCI-e adapter instead of using a NVMe HBA with retimer chip? Some example I'm thinking about:

I just purchased a A2U8X25S3PHS backplane with AOC-SLG3-4E2P and some cables. I was thinking pf the dual pcie adapters but if all you need is a single then its tough to justify the extra money. Personally I want to get more out of the PCIe slots. I have no idea if that brand works but for $30 there is not much risk.

I run two Optanes with cheap pcie to u.2 adapters bought from China. Works great!

Mine says L 65cm but not sure I trust the cable based on its label.

I purchased 4x this kit on Tuesday night just received them today. I didn't need/want cables. this kit came with only one so I figured I can throw it in the cable box. Label says SAS cable L: 65cm - no idea if this will work on a u.2 but I will give it a go out of curiosity. 2 are for an in progress build using a BPN-SAS3-826A-N4 and an X10SRL-F. I won't have hotswap but that's okay.

Cable works fine with a U.2 device. In my case it was a 256GB 80mm samsung stick in an icy dock m.2 to u.2 adapter. Didn't wanna risk burning a good drive if the cable wasn't right.

Based on the kit you order YMMV.
