You are absolutely right. I didn’t think to look at the block diagram. Now I’m kinda bummed this board does not have sata dom power or internal usb.
which version of vmware are you trying to install on the microsd? esxi 7.0 has some new disk size requirements for the actual hypervisor.

So overall the tyan is worth buying? Or if you had a do over would you still wait for supermicro h12?

For the price, it’s hard to beat. I have consumed a lot of pcie slots already with 10g+ network card and hba that could be built in but it will cost you.

Yep - I’m happy with the Tyan. I wish it had better fan control but the fact that the fan does ramp up sets my mind at ease - was worried the system didn’t have any protection against the CPU overheating.

Note that I flashed the BMC and BIOS firmware via the IPMI and it went smoothly. I believe Supermicro charges extra to let you do that (wonder if that has changed now)

the m.2 slots show pcie 3.0 in the block diagram but the manual states pcie 4.0. I am assuming that since this board is new, they did not update all of the docs. I have seen the same with supermicro and verified that the m.2 were pcie 4.0 (h12ssw-in). I have not done that yet with the tyan. the linux command is lspci -vv. I currently have vmware esxi 6.7 loaded on the tyan and unfortunately vmware does not have the same info with that command. I am assuming the tyan has pcie 4.0 for the m.2 but want to verify.

For the M.2 slots, it's unclear if there were any signal redeliver chips to clean up the signal enough for PCIe 4.0 and if they just didn't design and qualify the M.2 slots for Gen4 operation so it might be fixed in the BIOS to operate at Gen 3 speeds? It would be good for someone with a Gen4 M.2 to stick it in and see what it comes up as.

loaded centos on a pcie 3.0 m.2 and left the pcie 4.0 m.2 (with vmware on it) in the second slot. the good news is that it looks like the m.2 slots support pcie 4.0:

I really haven't found anything wrong with this board at least for my weird use case!

I have a very similar build and I am also very happy with the results. I'm using a 2U short depth rack mount and Dynatron SP3 heatsink. I found the Tyan algorithm ramps up the fan speeds when the temperature hits 75 and the temperature will drop slowly. Eventually, the fans will slow down slightly so the temperature ramps and stays steady at 75C. At full load running Prime95 in a VM on all 32 cores, 2 x Samsung 970 pro 1TB, 1 x P4801x 100G optane, Lenovo 530-8i Flash to IT mode and a Mellanox LX-4 with a QSFP to SFP+ adapter connected to by SG500x just consuming ~200W. At light loads, I saw it hovering around 80W and bursting to 100W once in a while.

one of the unique features of this board is the support for pcie 4.0. This feature doubles the bandwidth and when combined with the number of pci lanes that the amd chips provide really make this combination stand out (at least if you need this bandwidth.) I had a specific requirement as I need to run multiple dual port 100G NICs. If the board only supported pcie 3.0, the NICs would be bottlenecked by the pci bus. The specific NICs are mellanox connectx-5 516CDAT. These are pcie 4.0 compliant and work as such in this board. As an added benefit, pci gen 4 SSDs perform much faster that the previous generation of SSDs. The newer m.2 SSDs do not cost that much more so this is something that I have done as well with all of my new builds. This board also has plenty of storage options with most supporting the highest data rates. I don't have a need for any of this extra storage so that is one of the features that I do not take advantage of but most people might.

Just purchased a Brocade ICX-6610 and will use that to connect to the Mellanox CX-3 via QSFP @ 40 Gbit/s

How long did it take for you guys to get the special order cpu from provantage?
