Troubleshooting a network

At home I have a 10GbE network interface on my pfSense machine. But something is limiting me to 1GbE. I am setting up a little lab with everything running into a Quanta LB6M.

There are two 1GbE switches linked via SFP+ to the LB6M

All switches are in dumb default LAN mode except one of the 1GbE switches has my single WAN in Ethernet and it has a VLAN for four ports:
  • port 0 - WAN
  • port 1 - home network pfSense WAN
  • port 2 - lab network pfSense WAN
  • port 3 - new lab network pfSense WAN
Just keeping this simple for now so all the other ports are not on the same VLAN.
pfSense is linked via SFP+ to the LB6M
Machine 1 is linked via SFP+ to the LB6M (no VLAN)
Machine 2 is linked via SFP+ to the LB6M (no VLAN)

All are on the same /22 IP address range.

I've checked the interfaces, and machines 1 and 2 are all show:

It seems like everything should be fine to run at 10Gb but I am only getting about 900mbit with iperf.

Does anyone have ideas on how I can troubleshoot what is going wrong?

What two devices are you doing the speed test using?
When you do a speed test try checking the interface utilization of all the ports on the switch to see if the data is flowing in/out a port you don't expect.

are you sure your PFsense can keep up ?
are there any other services running, and maybe eating up network speed ?

are both machines actually showing 10Gbit ?
Have you checked duplex setting ( not sure that applies here, but never bad idea to check and make sure)

I have seen it before on network equipment where both sides will run at different speeds. If you look at the port statistics on the switch (if that's supported) you would see lots of errored packets.
