Is this purely marketing?
Nope. The transceivers contain data like manufacturer, model, serial number or revision. Some devices check for these and only allow certain values.
What should I be looking for when looking for compatible transceivers?
The device vendors? If you have a cisco switch and a melllanox nic get a transceiver with cisco information for the switch and a mellanox coded transceiver for the mellanox nic :D

That is a tricky topic. My experience is that the 1G modules and card vendors are more problematic than the latest crop of 40G or even 100G gear. No party is in a know what will work and what not - just have to by a pair and test it out yourself.
