By the time I need a lot of storage I'm hoping 10TB is affordable and 24x 10TB will be awesome in 4U :D

The WD My Book 8TB I got from BB does this over USB 3.0.

AFAIK, it has to be a 7200 RPM drive to bench like this. I'll open it up later after I "beat" on it a bit.

@Stereodude were those in the USB 3.0 chassis?
Yes, the standard USB 3.0 My Book 8TB chassis. I bought it from Best Buy. I'm tempted to get another one or two, but I'm not sure what I'd do with it/them. I just built a new server/NAS so it's set for storage as are my two v1 E5 Xeon builds.

So I couldn't help myself and ordered another for pickup from BB. I'm just going to use it as an external drive. My only external drives bigger than 2TB right now are two 3TB Seagate Backup Plus units, and I think they contain the much maligned 3TB Seagate HDDs that have a bad reputation for their high failure rates.

Here is the result of my buying 5 of those external 5 TB toshibas on Amazon.

Consider myself winning. Hopefully I won't have warranty claims.

Looks like this particular external model has been discontinued (from Jet, and not sold from Amazon on Amazon now). This is the replacement I found on Jet: Jet.com - Prices Drop As You Shop

According to Amazon reviews, it should theoretically still have the MD04ACA5 drive inside (one review stating there was an MD04ACA6 in the 6TB version). I have one on order and I'll verify next week when it arrives. It was pretty much the same price as before if you use the "new customer" coupons again.

I received the new model today and it is indeed an MD04ACA500 and can still be shucked, but I thought it was a little bit harder than the last model. I used two flat head screw drivers to simultaneously pry the cover off from both sides. After that, it's a simple unscrew the hard drive from the mounts and USB/power board and that's it!

About six months ago I got all excited because the retail SATA version PH3500U-1I72, aka MD04ACA500 was steeply discounted at Worst Buy. Despite the price being in their ads, on their website and marked on the shelf the cashier still rang it up at their usual price, more than $100 higher, and it took them 5 minutes to verify the price I came in for.

It was only after reading this forum later that I learned that what I paid was about the same as the usual online price for the same drive in a USB3 enclosure.
