Oh? Trying to put an AMD Epyc on an old Ultra 10 chassis? I still have a soft spot for the SunFire V100s...(arguably my first 1U home server)
This is actually the Sun Ultra 24. The donor is a Core 2 Duo box.

I think a lot of us on STH had Sun gear at some part. I believe @Marsh told me a story about the Sun towers he bought decades ago.

Plan is to use: EPYC 7371. Gigabyte MZ01-CE0 motherboard. EVGA 1kW PSU. NVIDIA RTX 2080 Ti (maybe 2 or Titan RTX) 128GB will be the minimum RAM, but likely 256GB. Also planning to put 100GbE or 40GbE as available, 10TB hard drives, SSDs. Retrofit for USB 3.0 front panel instead of the DVD.

Ok that is great! I think this will need USB 3.0 on the front panel though.
add a hard drive, ssd, and USB 3.0:

or, for the sake of being old school, swap the optical for a slim optical while adding a SSD and USB 3.0:

But, what in the world are you building?

I still have a stack of UltraSPARC Sun gear I need to get rid of ;-)

I like those ideas, but I am not sure on the chrome trim for the drive bays.

A (Sun) Ultra EPYC workstation is my project for the holiday season.

nothing a can of spray paint can't fix. plus, you should get a can of spray paint matched to the U24 exterior anyway... it will be useful for your custom retro build.

I was thinking that, but to me, the ugly non-matching black DVD drive was actually a hallmark feature of the Ultra 24 platform.

uh... no, i would not call that a "hallmark", rather a anti-hallmark - Sun was fully capable of paying attention to detail as they did here:

but there was some point where they gave up on trying with the U24.

This post should have a NSFW tag on it. Holy epic (pun intended) build Batman. Another deep learning article in the works?

Ha! Well Jan 2 we are scheduled to get an 8x Tesla V100 system in the lab... But maybe.

@BLinux that is exactly my thinking. The one reason I remember the Ultra 24 is because they gave up. It is like a birthmark. Great looking machine and Bam!

Now your point is well taken. It is an opportunity to remedy

@gigatexal nothing I did to make top of hacker news. I was a bit surprised yesterday afternoon. STH's Google Analytics is on a few hour delay. We still do not have final numbers for yesterday but it looks like it will be 3-5% higher than Thursday. Normally we see a dip in traffic Friday as people around the world start their weekends.
