Hey guys, just as a heads-up since I know we are all looking at 10GbE gear. I was at UnixSurplus earlier today and picked up/ got to see their Quanta LB6M switches. They have these new sealed in box. Ship date on the pallets was in 2016 and they are from Amazon. Amazon was apparently using two of these for TOR switches and these are surplus. Here is a picture:

UnixPlus has them at $325 right now. If you want to use STH50LB6M18 you can get them for $275 or I believe.

Tagging @Jack@UNIXPlus if folks have questions. I do not think we are getting a cut of these sales but figured we can get some special STH pricing on them.

QoS manual for Quanta LB6M

I have seen a bunch of threads on here about them. At $12.50 per 10GbE port they are basically SFP+ L2 switches for not much more than 1Gbase-T. I have been semi-happy with the Mikrotik CRS317 at home, so am trying this one as well since it is cheaper and has more ports.

Is is possible to elaborate on the "semi happy" aspect of the Mikrotik CRS317, some of the downsides. I've been looking at it for some time now but have been concerned about its performance given all the knocks on its L3 performance. I'd really like to avoid the lb6m for home use given the noise.

My CRS317 fans are always spun up. Very loud. If I am going to replace fans, I may just do it on the LB6M.

True. I have seen some easy replacements of CRS317 fans though. + a fan replace on the LB6M is both case and PS fans if you're really looking to make a difference. I think i'm not brave enough to replace the PS fans

I have two that I got awhile back. Great for setting up cheap 10g for web hosting. At this price, you could setup a 10g network just for network booting.

The power consumption on LB6M speak a different story though, for home lab, it is definitely way too much. Replacing fans isn't quickly done either, the power supply fans requires some additional work to replace. The chassis fans are ok though.

how bad is the power consumption? can this run with 1 PSU without it beeping and throwing error signs?

The image shows two power supplies:

Top = Quanta LB6M ( Delta Power Supply )
  • Input 100-240V ~, 47-63Hz, 5.0A
  • Output +12V - 25.0A
  • Max Continuous DC Output Power 300W
  • Dual fans for airflow
Btm = Arista 7050T-52 ( Emerson Power Supply )
  • Input 100-240V ~, 50-60Hz, 5.29-2.2A
  • Output 460W +12V - 36.0A Max / 460w +12Vsb - 2.3A Max
  • Max Continuous Output Power 460W (100-240V~)
  • Single fan for airflow
Both switches come with 2x Power Supplies

Running with just one psu is fine, no warnings but it doesn’t reduce power consumption a lot. Maybe a few watts.
Mine’s been up for over a year on one psu.

FYI guys... at least until end of 2017, there is another code available that provides free shipping "FREESHIP2017". This might make a slightly better deal than $25 off if shipping > $25. (it does for me in southern CA)

@BLinux apparently they saw that and sent a $50 off for STH members coupon STH50LB6M17

I was told that is valid until the end of the year.

Hi Guys,

Here's the official link for $50 as Patrick mentioned.
UNIXPlus

Keep in mind the $50 is good till end of 2017. After that you'll have to use STH25OFFLB6M to get $25 off.

Earlier forum posts suggest these pull around 130 watts when run on 120V (a bit less on 230V) depending on load.

For comparison, the CRS317 is about 30 watts - 44 peak, plus SFPs - and if operating correctly shouldn't ever really spin the fans up.
It's completely worthless at layer-3, though. Sufficient processing power to handle your internet connection, but the CPU only has a 1Gbps pipe to the switch chip. The chip does support hardware-accelerated L3 forwarding/routing, and MT are working on implementation, but it'll probably be the better part of a year.

IMO, these are well worth it for the wirespeed L3 (when flashed) functionality, and what's 100W between friends?

Hi @Jack@UNIXPlus

Can we work these same deals on the eBay listings using the Best Offer feature? That would be a tiny bit more with the eBay Bucks since I'm obviously too late for the 2017 deal... :) I thought I did see somene post that the $50 off was extended through March though? Or maybe a different deal if I bought two at once? Feel free to send me a PM or reply here. Thanks!

The STH deal for $50 off is indeed extended till end of March 2018. Also, you can use the code STH50LB6M17 an infinite amount of times till then as it'll apply to all LB6M quantities in the cart.
