What do you think the next CPU will be for the 2011-3 platform that will be similarly available/priced like the E5-2670 was for the 2011-1 platform?

I think the 2011-3 platform is now stagnant. Skylake-X (7000 series) will be the last generation for it.

Intel have switched to the LGA 3647 socket for the Xeon line. They are likely to switch the workstation platform to that socket as well. The "5Ghz" 28 core workstation Intel showed recently, was based on LGA3647. Their board partners would not make a special motherboard for a tech preview. It was most likely based on a development board for the next workstation platform.

I think @Erlipton is asking, what is the next big used/off lease CPU we can expect that was deployed in large numbers like e5-2670 v1

I would guess from what I see e5-2680v4 (I know it’s price at the time was about $1700 vs $1500 but it did seem to be the popular model), but we won’t see this until next year and even then it probbaly depends on scalable v2 release and what it offers.

Maybe somebody else has a view to the big cloud providers and know what they used ?

This is exactly what I'm asking, thanks for the feedback!

Just keep in mind my feedback relates to enterprise IT, and the cloud providers are the ones who create volume, having said that I still believe the next big wave will be when v4 CPU’s are being replaced and that won’t be before some time 2019 (or later)
