OK; yesterday evening I got an email alert telling me I'd had a disc failure on one of my RAID arrays, an eight-spindle RAID6 hanging off a crossflashed M1015. Sure enough once I get on the terminal not only has the drive been ejected from the array but it's vanished from the OS as well.

Rebooted the box to get the disc to re-appear (this is a backup box so I can jiggle it if I need to)... drive is there, I run a SMART short against it... no issues. I run a SMART long against it... passes. I try re-adding it to the array and it's kicked almost immediately, and once again vanishes from the OS.

I reboot again and start running badblocks -ws, which starts spewing errors almost immediately so I chalk this one up to "OK, one of those failures that SMART failed to spot yet again". But the nature of the failure is odd (drive was torture-test before going into the array and is ~6 months old so any issues with the on-ramp of the bacthtub curve should be long gone) so I plug the drive into my live server... and that's been happily chewing through badblocks. Zero errors so far after an hour of running.

Given that, I started to worry if there might perhaps be something wrong with a single port on my M1015. Do readers know of any way I might be able to test this other than plugging in different hard drives...?

SMART output of the drive as it stands at the moment:
