I pulled the trigger yesterday on my SM X9SCM-F
Supermicro | Products | Motherboards | Xeon® Boards | X9SCM-F
I have a I7 3770k sitting on my desk and from what I understood it should / or could work with that board.
Can anyone comment on that?
As the SM site says explicitly:
Single socket H2 (LGA 1155) supports Intel® Xeon® E3-1200 & E3-1200 v2 series, 2nd and 3rd Gen Core i3
processors***, Pentium, Celeron
* Per Intel's spec, for platforms using C202/C204 PCH:
1) Intel i5/i7 CPUs are not supported
2) Intel E3-12x5 series processors which have integrated graphics support are not recommended.
*** BIOS rev. 2.0 or above is needed to support new E3-1200 v2 CPUs, which supports PCI-E 3.0 & DDR31600.
So I am expecting the board to arrive and my tests will show the I7 is not working.
What CPU should I choose?
I need 16 PCI-e lanes, so I think I would have to go with a XEON E3 V2
?
Or is that just because of the PCIe 3.0 lanes?
The CPU should be able to
run 3-5 VMs (one windows machine, one linux, one XPenology, two "I don't know yets")
and I would like it to be not too power hungry
