I grabbed one, now on the search for medium performing 26xx v2's.

Q? Would you gamble on 2x CPUs from the same vendor even though not advertised as a pair?
I would contact the vendor as a lot of times the individual ones started out as a pair. :)

From what I read and experienced, as long as the CPU are same S-SPEC / stepping even if they are not matched pair they worked fine.

So as long as the CPUs match the piccy in the sale... And are identical. Then good. Thx
Most important part is that those s-specs are matching. Otherwise you could have an issue as they're not completely 'identical' cpus.

This would be a good entry for a pfSense router with some E5-2630L v2 cpus.

That's a tremendous overkill for pfsense unless you are adding a whole host of other services such as IDS/IPS, VPN etc. And Idle power is not different between the regular and L series. You will be crippled on single threaded apps requiring higher frequencies.

Seller accepted $110 for one pretty quickly, perhaps I should have aimed lower. Does anyone know if you need to populate both sockets to use the PCIE x16 slot? Should only have to use the CPU tied to that slot right?

These did come out of a large compute cluster. They were running 2x E5-2620 v2s. The seller has them for $39 or BO.

I may be able to offer advice if anyone has issues.

The block diagram for the X9DRD-LF shows that the second CPU has the pcie slot so you need to populate both sockets unfortunately.

Darn. I really need a new motherboard for a Supermicro storage server and this thing is cheaper than an LGA2011 motherboard by itself (I already have the processors for it).
Alas, they don't ship to Canada :(

I'm curious as to how loud these would be under load as those fans look like they'd scream.

Would anyone happen to know if there is a compatible pci-e riser?
It looks like a standard riser layout so it shouldn't need anything special. Something like the RSC-RR1U-E16 will probably work. They're under $10 on ebay so not a huge risk if they don't work out and you need find something else.

They're 40mm so they won't be quiet, but they're also not the counter-rotating dual fan assemblies, so with PWM control through IPMI should be manageable depending on your sensitivity.
