My man houkouonchi brought this to my attention, $249 for a loaded Supermicro SC846TQ 24-bay, only catch is no drive caddies so you'd have to track those down. But its got a motherboard, CPU, RAM, internal 160GB boot drive, 3 x SAT2-MV8 Raid Cards, dual redundant PSU's.

You're not going to be running VM's on this thing but it would make a decent enough NAS or solaris box since that supermicro/marvell controller is very well supported there. Or just toss the guts and replace with better. The SAT2-MV8's alone would fetch $30-$40 a piece reselling those.

It's certainly worthy of some thought before jumping on old gear that *looks* like a good deal, because one of the things people often forget to factor is how much of your own time its going to cost to get something to where its beneficial. And oftentimes it doesn't make sense once you factor time in.

And that type of sanity check is also important when considering putting new money into old gear -- since it tends to be much more difficult to get rid of stuff thats a few gens behind.

I've got an SM 826, the slightly smaller brother of this chassis, with sas expander on the backplane. I like it a lot, though use it as a jbod for now.

The drive trays can be had for around US$14 on EBay.

I am tempted even though it will be a massive expense on shipping over. Would still probably work out cheaper than buying new for just the chassis.

If anyone is looking for those drive trays I can get them for $12 ea. + shipping, if this helps anyone.

Model: MCP-220-00024-0B

Search this model and there's a seller selling these for $9.99 ea.

CSE-PT39 will work too but more expensive...
