I vaguely recall reading somewhere that there are 2 rail kits for this box, one that doesn't allow it to slide out far enough to get the top off and one that does. Does anyone have the part # of the one that does?

Thanks

Part number vary by generation and you'll have to get the correct one. The earlier revisions are a lot wider and require screws to hold them in place. Newer revisions are tool-less. They aren't interchangeable. You'll be able to tell by looking at the side of your chassis to see the spacing on the flanges the rails attach to. If you have a 6gbit backplane or more recent, it will be the newer generation.

All 3 are like this. Am I correct in assuming they are the newer generation?

Looks like it to me. Should be MCP-290-00058-0N then. MCP-290-00057-0N are the older ones.

Supermicro MCP-290-00053-0N are the rails you want for full extension. They will have the yellow labels vs the old blue labels that didn't fully extend. I have 7 sets of this exact rail so I can guarantee with 100% certainty they are the ones your looking for. That is of course if you have this style of chassis. Some of the really old chassis had a much wider or taller pattern.

Sorry for the resurrection again. I am looking for a set of rails for the older 846 with the taller style mounts, anyone got a part number off the top of their head?

"The part number for the older rails is MCP-290-00001-00"
That were the wide ones for my SC836 - you might try to find out they work for 846 too.

MCP-290-00058-0N

compatible to original 2U chassis because 2U didn't change hooks.

The following chassis require new rev to fit new rail MCP-290-00058-0N (for short-depth rack):

SC835,836,936 after J2
SC846 after K4
SC848 after A8
SC748 after K0

A belated thanks to you sir. I have a newer 846 and an older one. Wish I had been paying attention when ordering rails... Are the rails mentioned long enough to slide out the chassis for service?

Sorry for necroing an old thread. I've recently bought an old revision SC846 chassis and didn't realize new rails wouldn't fit. I can't find the rail with part number MCP-290-00014-00 but the one with part number MCP-290-00001-00 is abundant. Have anyone tried fitting an MCP-290-00001-00 to an old rev SC846 chassis?

If you'd provide pics & links it might be easier than asking ppl to look up everything for you;)

Yes those fit my old SC836. So its a good chance.
If you have a pic of your 846 i might be able to tell better

Actually that looks like the new rail set - the old one is really wide.
Do you have a serial number?

I have an SC836 with the new rails and I've just measured it. The distance of those things (whatever it may be called) is 1 and 1/4 inch vs 2 and 3/4 for the old rev SC846.
