Supermicro 846 chassis standoffs

I noticed that the chassis has etchings labeled A, P and D at the standoff locations. Do they mean anything for SM motherboards?

yes, they are for different MB layout/size.as in atx, m-atx/u-atx, itx, e-atx
usually the MB manual will tell you what layout to use , or the case manual will.

Interesting, neither the SC846 chassis manual nor motherboard X10Dri-T talks about these.
Any other documentation which talks about these?

To review an old thread, which ones are needed for an ATX motherboard? I'm converting an older storage only build to a full machine with compute.

The "stand-offs" posted above were talking about features certain SuperMicro motherboards used for heatsinks. These would not be used by a standard ATX board.

All you should need are either the standoffs that are already in the chassis, or possibly need to pickup Supermicro part# MCP-110-00070-0N like at the following (please note I have not ever purchased from that site, it is just the first return from a search engine):

The ones holding the control board are a different size the 4 larger "A"/"P" types

correct. the JBOD board standoffs are a different height than the motherboard standoffs. You can still easily find compllent head units (SC040 / CSE-836) and those have the heatsinks connected to the chassis in addition to the other motherboard height standoffs.

based on your picture you do have the chassis side threaded nipple connections for the normal motherboard standoffs. You are simply missing correct height standoffs. If you are in the US then the bay or @Fallen Kell is your friend. techy_parts is advertising them for basically $2 each - which on the surface seems excessive but - then again, managing, packaging little loose parts and all that.

There are sets on the bay with screws, standoffs and a handy dandy perfect sized wrench. Notably from TM_* sellers - which I still think are someone or someones who are pushing bits out the back door from the San Jose SM warehouse.

YMMV but as far as I know the motherboard height standoffs are the same on 826, 836, and 846 (2U-4U). In my parts bins I only separate the heatsink height standoffs from the 2U+ standoffs.

The standoff height is NOT the same for the 1U chassis.

The "kits" available on the bay may or may not have enough standoffs for your motherboard. ATX, ATX-E, ATX-EE, ATX-SSE - may have different requirements for qty.

You might ask on the WTB thread as someone might have extras for you...

lastly with SM moving away from selling single/retail motherboards I expect that their random parts supply chain will also tighten up and some of these items will become more difficult to source OEM parts and possibly more expensive.

I purchased one MCP-110-00070-0N from Techy thinking that and it does not fit. It's female threaded on both ends, there's nowhere to attach it on the chassis. I have no male threads on my chassis that it attaches to, if you can circle where you see them so I can be 100% we are talking about the same thing, I can show you that it doesn't fit. The protrusions you see look like rivets, they are smooth on the protruding ends, no threads.

Where the motherboard lines up to the IO plate hole I have female threaded holes on the chassis marked "F"

It's a very strange situation imo.

very strange. I have an 846 (for someone else) that I can crack and take a look at. But all my 826's 216's, and 836's have the threaded nipples. there usually recessed, there isn't much thread on them nor do they stand particularly high but they are there. I will take a look tonight and see if I have time to pop the motherboard out and get an upclose picture.

This must be an ANCIENT 846 JBOD build and I've not see this on any of the above chassis.

I'm happy to grab more photos, It was pulled from a DC in Prague and I shipped it to the US. $400 all in (then fedex messed up on the quote and it cost me an extra $200 sadly in extra - not tariffs - shipping fees) so really ~$600 all in. But I've wanted one and by the time I got around to doing this project they were all unobtanium in the US for a reasonable price.

*edit* For anyone wondering in the future the Standoff thread size that fits the SMC CSE 846 "Z","A","C", "B", "Q" and "F" type holes is a 4+6 #6-32

sooooo those standoffs. those look fairly familiar to me circa late nineties to early aughts - see my collection from mass PC assembly days at a VAR where we did *everything* soup to nuts for clients including building their pc's.. We're talking OG ATX specs and assembly. Maybe SM never updated the 846 or they did and you really have a very old one - not to be confused with the great old ones.

edit - oh yeah #6-32 is standard pc standoff thread... probably in the ATX spec.

I will let you know for sure, I'm fitting in an ATX mobo and swapping out the PSU's for an ATX, I plan on ensuring everything is reversable b/c I want to keep the case in good condition.

You might find this very interesting, the Backplane I have is BPN-SAS2-846EL2, REV 1.10

Which is both good for my use-case of moving my high capacity NAS Drives over (20TB+, finally upgrading from my old 40TB NAS), but also an interesting age time period of 2010s -2018 I believe.

This is an old chassis, I've seen these in 216s too. I've also removed that entire plate from a 216, but it's not rigid and the bottom is kinda floppy, but it works. I think someone else said it in this thread they're for old, specific motherboard\hsf combo, they usually have a cut-out area for the area under the CPU and it's raised to account for this area during install.

If you can't tell by looking at the motherboard and mounting points what needs moved where then you can carefuly set the board down where it needs to go (do not slide it on stand offs) then use a perm marker through each hole (I like bright red), now each hole is marked, move stand-off to correct location, and remove all others not in use.

That's just weird. I wonder if they simply had inventory of the old chassis and used those for jbods. so weird.
