I have a SM 836 chassis with only the inner rails. I read a lot about wide rails and narrow rails for older vs newer chassis. The terms wide and narrow are great if one is holding two sets of rails. Otherwise, they are pointless. :) The inner rails on my chassis are 1.5" wide. are look exactly like the ones here

with the exception mine lack a rev B sticker. Mine are also labeled as Repton as the chassis was a Compellent controller. I'm pretty sure I need the MCP-290-00053-0N rail set which is considered to be the narrow set. Can anyone with these rails confirm the width of inner rail? Thanks!

Sometime ago I posted in deals section for the full set of rails (Repon). It was almost the same price as just the outer rails from other sellers on ebay. If they still have, I think it would probably be the safest way. I know you would end up with extra set of inner rails

Thanks for the reply, but you missed my concern. I am concerned about the rails fitting the chassis not the inner rails. Most of the rails sets I see come with both the inner and the outer. There are 2 types of rails one for older chassis another for newer usually described as narrow or wide.

Easiest would be identifying the Chassis revision, but I don't think you have a SM sticker on it, do you?

In general:
MCP-290-00058-0N
compatible to original 2U chassis because 2U didn't change hooks.
The following chassis require new rev to fit new rail MCP-290-00058-0N (for short-depth rack):
SC835,836,936 after J2
SC846 after K4
SC848 after A8
SC748 after K0

The part number for the older rails is MCP-290-00001-00

I'll try to have a look at my older (revision Jo) 836 later to check whether I have those inner rails too or different ones

Edit: I'd say you have the narrow ones:)

May I ask what would be the correct rail set for this 836 rack of mine?
This is the sticker on the case:
C83600827J00240

Thanks @Rand_
Does that mean my 836 can ONLY use the old rails?

Would this model work ?
MCP-290-00053-0N

I think 0053 is similar to 0058 and only for the newer ones. The ones fitting a J0 836 are similar to the image above in post #4 - wide rails. The 0053 are narrow ones compared to those

Not well I think since you have the hooks you see on the image... if u r lucky they fit the large holes. ...

FYIW, I wrote to supermicro, and they confirm that the appropriate rails for my chassis is indeed MCP-290-00053-0N
