just saw this and thought it was a really good deal for $300 + shipping. Shipping to CA for me is $45, so I suspect for most US residents, this is going to be under $350.

SUPERMICRO 2U BAREBONE SERVER X9DRI-LN4F+ REV 1.20 12x Trays Add CPU/Ram/HDD | eBay

Has a X9DRi-LN4F+ rev 1.20 motherboard, which will support v2 Ivy Bridge CPUs. Has 24x DIMMs which is more than the usual 16x DIMMs, but to fully populate requires attention to supported RAM configurations. 4x 16x PCI-E 3.0 slot to accommodate wide PCI-E cards. They only thing I don't like about this board is lack of good HBA, and there have been some reports of memory related issues when you fully populate all DIMMs. (I don't know if those have been fixed by BIOS update or not)

The backplane is a 826A, so essentially direct attached and can support SAS3 with a SAS3 controller and cables. The photos show cables with SFF-8643 connectors, so if that's what comes with it, adding a SAS3 controller should be easy.

The PSUs are Platinum efficiency, but not the "SQ" ones. If noise is a concern, might have to consider the cost of upgrading to the "SQ" PSUs for another ~$160-ish.

My experience with this seller has mostly been good, but not perfect. They have messed up a few orders, but did eventually fix the problem; just wasted some time. I would still buy from them if I wanted this.

SAS2 is good for spin drives, but not for SSD, and SAS3 is quite expensive right now right? i dont see any sas3 being cheap on eBay right now.

There was a SAS3 216 server for about $700 including a pair of 2680, but i think it just sold as I can't find it anymore.

Didn't notice the shortage of SAS216A till I saw this thread. Kind of surprised at the price of used 216A backplane alone. When I got mine about a year ago, got the whole chassis shipped for about $200.

@mmo
Keep an eye TAM solutions. They typically get there from time to time.

I actually don't see a point in plain SAS3-216A. Sas216A can do SAS3 speed (unofficially) They have another SAS3 backplane variant with 20+4 NVME.

point being that you need less HBA ports. I have a 216A, and I need 6x ports, which in a 2U chassis means 3x HBAs. but, that aside, the 216A+3xHBAs is still often cheaper than the SAS3 backplane. however, the deal I saw (that is no longer) was an exception... it was a lot cheaper, and came with a SAS3 HBA already.

I was about to bit the TAMS one with 15% coupon last time, but didn't and grabbed a 846 SAS2 instead. I am not in any rush to get the SAS2 216A at all, patient always pays off with all the goodies :)
