Mine is similar to yours except I have 2 X5670's, 96gb of ram, a Melanox 10gb Nic and a 6 port Intel based gigabit NIC for my VM's.

This is with the 700w PSU's.

Interesting metrics, and yeah I forgot to mention I have the 1200W gold rated PSUs.

By the way, can you send me a link to the auction or at least the part number/model of that 6 port gigabit NIC you have? I'm highly interested in getting one, didn't know GbE cards went above 4 port models.

They work for me but then again, I'm not that discriminating. Maybe I'm missing something and don't know it. These require no driver, just install and go. They do what I need them to do and most of all they're cheap, just like me. :D

i feel ya, it's definitely a good value. i might pick 2 up and use them to link between my NAS and backup server, neither would be virtual per so the technology between those 2 wouldnt be needed.

Isn't VMDq used to offload network processing from Hyper-V to the NIC's hardware itself (hardware vs software)? Also used in teaming (doubling up) across 2 or more NICs?

VMDq has nothing to do with the teaming of NICs but it does do I/O offloading in Hyper-V and is an important part of optimizing a Hyper-V hosts for performance.

This is my idle power consumption from my server with 2x X5650 cpus, 48GB, and 12x3.5" disks, do you guys think I can lower the amps/wattage consumed by down-sizing to lower wattage PSUs, at least, by an amount that's worth spending moneyo n?

if you looks on 500W Platinum -> http://www.supermicro.com/products/powersupply/80PLUS/80PLUS_PWS-501P-1R.pdf
50W output 88.23% eff
100W output 93.01% eff
250W output 94.44% eff

500W output 92.47% eff

740W Platinum- http://www.supermicro.com/products/powersupply/80PLUS/80PLUS_PWS-741P-1R.pdf
W Out eff
74 84.07%
148 92.37%
369 94.55%

737 93.61%

1200W Gold -> http://www.supermicro.com/products/powersupply/80PLUS/80PLUS_PWS-1K21P-1R.pdf
W out eff
121 84.71%
242 89.67%
604 92.40%
1204 91.22%

bold highlighted is a sweat spot to save power :D
Platinum:
500W still the best bet for low noise and low power consumption for average 100-250W or 369W for 740 w

compared with 1200W gold, 92% eff is the sweet spot with 604W power output .

I believe, you can decide by pooling pdf files from SuperMicro site.

on my knowledge, 5ooW platinum still the best when the system unit is pooling 100-250W..

side note:
20W reduced when I switch to 500W platinum from 1200W gold. and very quite too (not whisper desktop psu quite :p). Noise or not is not really matter now due on everything is in my closed rack server...

The Intel i350 cards have VMDq and are around $50:

New Intel i350 T4 PCI Express PCI E Four RJ45 Gigabit Ports Server Adapter NIC | eBay

Though, all the "$60" versions are from China/Hong Kong (gotta wait for them). All the ones state-side are > $110.

Humm, I may just pick one of these up...
if you the consequences buying from overseas China card:D, you are good

before you buy, search on the net regarding "clone"/fake" chip that could not achieve the original one.
search on "counterfeit intel nic" <- the most counterfeit due on popularity ha..

My 3rd one just arrived. Both will now have the SAS2 backplane. It didn't include PSU's but I just upgraded the other to 700w platinums and so had a couple of 1200w. I also ordered another X8DT6-F MB so I can put the chassis with the SAS1 backplane back on eBay as a full system minus HDs and OS. I have 2 spare cpus, heatsinks and 16gb of ram. I figured this was a good way to off load the extra parts I had.

Hopefully I'm done for a while. :)

OK, it's mystery time. This chassis has a little board in it I didn't see in the other two. I went through the manual and it's not shown or mentioned. Does anybody know what it is?

It's got a long cable running from it.

At first I thought it was an intrusion switch but it's not a switch at all and it doesn't penetrate the side of the chassis.

Would someone kindly tell me what I have to do to embed pics? Thanks

that's the front IO board, 2 of the cases you got didn't have that? that cable ribbon hooks up to the pin-out on the mobo for the network/disk activity LEDs, power/reset buttons, and anything else included in the front panel.

lol, you should take pictures of the exact same spot in the other two cases and show us them, and, then ask the seller how exactly he thought you were going to turn your servers on? i mean you COULD use a flat head screw driver to close the circuit on the PWR jumper but come on.
