Yep! If you want to pay for more wattage usage for another device, and the administration overhead cost (and yet another device to keep Firmware updates on).

Every device can be restricted. But I have a FT job, a family with children, etc.

Who here has restricted your IPMI UDP packets with a managed switch? 2? 5? Out of how many?

The earlier versions actually open UPnP ports through your firewall:

Come on man this is supposed to be your passion! Find the time to do it lol.

Without setting off ....
The most alarming to me was even if you didn't connect a LAN cable to it, a lot of Supermicro boards were wired to share traffic with the normal LAN1 interface! Like, WTF were they thinking?
This is great info thanks. The Mr. Robot thing, what's that supposed to be about?

Not good, this makes a lot of added work. Hope I can clean BMC on supermicro boards.
If I remember right there's a BIOS setting to disable IPMI over the other interfaces.

So no remotely manage servers via IPMI?

How many of you have disabled cipher-0?

I think "most" is the answer to that question not 2 or 5 people ;)

I'm not sure about everyone else but my IPMI is on another network.

I get email alerts on this thread and the last page hasn't been about this product. Can we please stay on topic and move the unrelated security topics to another thread?

Could be worse, I have someone trying to sell his own stuff in my for-sale thread here.

I know... I don't know how that happened there! If anything, I thought I was helping to bump the thread up for ya.

Just a heads up: with the SAS2 backplanes back in stock at certifiedservers, I had them configure an SC846 + SAS2 backplane + 1x 1200W gold PSU + X8DTE-F, and they created a listing at $290: Supermicro SC846E16 R1200B BAREBONES 24 Bay 4U Server 1PSU | eBay
Yep, that's the same vendor as the $220 deal I posted yesterday of the bare chassis + backplane (no PSUs).

Decent deal for another $70: You get an LGA1366 motherboard that can host dual Hexcores and a Gold level PSU. A cheap 40W L5630 works great. If you need some horsepower, I recommend the L5640 CPUs - Hexcore, same 12MB cache as the big brothers but only 60W instead of 130W, just a lower clock speed at around 2.4 Ghz (which you can overclock) and lower interpath (5.86 GT/s if I recall).

Though I don't care for that PSU nor motherboard - idle wattage will be around 130 to 180W alone with a few sticks of ram, before adding HDDs.

I just bought a 847E16 ( the 36 bay version) with SAS2, rails, dual 1400w power supplies, all caddies of course, and...a Supermicro dual Xeon board in it (socket 1366) with dual E5620 CPUs, 24 gb Ecc ram

All for $350 shipped.
Can you provide the Ebay seller name and link to auction.. I would like to purchase one as well.

The 2 Pro-E5 PWS-741P-1R 740W 80 Plus Platinum's just arrived. They replaced 2 1200w Golds and are considerably quieter.

Many thanks eduncan911 for pointing this deal out and saving me $100 to boot. :)

Sweet! My "free shipping" of them is due Monday... Doh!

The $220 chassis is due today though... Where is that brown truck?!?

Do you have a Watt meter? Could you put the 2x 1200W Golds back in, measure your idle @ spin down, and then swap in the Platinums and do the same? The reason I picked the low-wattage (740W) Platinums was because my server will be idle the vast majority of the time. Lower W rating equals higher efficiency at low idle usage.

I have 2 1200w Golds right now.. Thinking about switching to 2 740w Platinum. Is there a big difference in the noise?

The SAS2 expanders shouldn't have a problem with large drives, I would err on the side of caution with the SAS1 expanders.

As an aside, you guys ordering these cases, are they including rails in the price?

Has anyone had any luck using these with 4TB+ size drives?
on my side:
Nada :D on SAS1. GET SAS2...

I posted that had wacky issue on SAS1 with 12X 2/3TB, and bought 3U and 4U sas2 SM case with SAS2 expander.

this is just my experience, yours would be diff.

the other annoying thing was, some HD negotiation drop to 1.5G SATA :p....

I have another SC846 arriving Monday with 2 1200w PSU's. I'll do a power comparison then.

And yes, the 740 Platinum is much quieter than the 1200 Gold.

This is my idle power consumption from my server with 2x X5650 cpus, 48GB, and 12x3.5" disks, do you guys think I can lower the amps/wattage consumed by down-sizing to lower wattage PSUs, at least, by an amount that's worth spending moneyo n?
