36 SSDs would use 144 PCIe lanes, and dual Xeons only have 96, so I assume they must be using PCIe extenders?

I'm amazed they can get any air flowing through that; surely you must be sacrificing CPU performance with such a restrictive setup?

It's compatible with m.2 and u.2 so it's possible that it uses "only" 2 lanes per ssd.
