36 SSDs would use 144 PCIe lanes, and dual Xeons only have 96, so I assume they must be using PCIe extenders?

I'm amazed they can get any air flowing through that; surely you must be sacrificing CPU performance with such a restrictive setup?

It's compatible with m.2 and u.2 so it's possible that it uses "only" 2 lanes per ssd.

It shouldn't be compatible with M.2 or U.2. M.2 doesn't support hot swap and U.2 is a 2.5" form factor. This looks more or less identical to Samsung's reference Mission peak system: https://www.samsung.com/us/labs/pdfs/collateral/SMSG_MissionPeak_Datasheet_v099_final_to_print.pdf
