Are those redundant power supplies? Also if they have the X9DRW-7TPF+ boards (not clear from listing) then that would mean hardware RAID (SAS2208 IIRC)

Not a good deal - a GREAT deal - at least it is if you are looking for a 1U with 8x 2.5s for ssds. The chassis alone is worth more, even without the sleds. If my rack wasn't recently filled I'd be all over this.

Isn't the backplane passthrough SAS1 (3G)?
I wouldn't want my SSDs connected to anything below 6G these days...

SATA doesn't matter. 12gb sas might be different but I'd wager these work on 6gb without any issues.

a TQ backplane has no problems what so ever to work on 3 or 6gbps, it's an i-pass backplane, so it's going at the speed your controller goes. 12gbps isn't supported yet on TQs, may happen at one point tho.

How cheap can you find the 8x 2.5" bays and rail kits for these?
Does the chassis in use also mean that you end up being required to run an addon controller?

Rail Kit: Supermicro SuperServer Rail Kit SC813M 6015W 6015B T 6015 1U | eBay
$24.99 and they're compatible with it as SC813 and SC119 has the same part numbers for rails.

Caddy: Supermicro SAS SATA 2 5" Hard Drive Tray Caddy for SC809T SC116 SC119 Servers | eBay
$7 each, but knowing supermicro, about all 2.5" caddy are the same, so you can get it for far cheaper if you look.
Lot of 4 SAS SATA Hard Drive Caddy 2 5" for Supermicro Server w 4 Screws | eBay
Like this, 4 for $15

You can connect the motherboard sata ports directly on the backplane. It's using 8 sas/sata connectors, and not SFF-8087 connectors.
See backplane manual here:

Hrm. Tempting. I was looking at the Thinkserver RD540 that was $500 or so with e5-2609 and 8gb - but no hardware raid, no redundant PSU, and certainly no 10gbe onboard. Has to be a reasonable way to make two of these into an HA SAN.... Now to talk myself out of it.... Anyone know where to find some compatible CPU's cheap? I can't tell but I'm assuming no heat sinks included but supermicro ones must be fairly common?

+1 to that. If there were more it would go on the main site. This is an awesome find.

@NetWise - one thing to watch out for is if you get CPUs needing v2 enabled bios for the E5 V2 CPUs to work. You just need 1x V1 CPU to flash though. ebay has cheap processors.

Heatsinks should be fairly easy to get. Much less expensive than consumer versions.

I have some customers that a previous sales person sold e5-2609's then wondered why they didn't cluster nicely with the e5-2620's that I'm hoping I could get someone to upgrade and provide me a source ;).

The problem with heatsinks for me isn't often availability - apparently shipping big chunks of metal to Canada is expensive, regardless of size. You US'ians don't know how lucky you've got it ;).

Can someone here give me an really basic guess how much an server like this is supposed to be worth?
Well, I'm typically a Dell PowerEdge kind of guy, so I'd compare against that.
Dell Poweredge R620 2 X SIX Core E5 2620 2 0GHz 32GB NO HDD Rails | eBay

This would be (quickly) comparable. The unit in this thread is going to be very similar in function to a Dell R620 with 2x1GbE/2x10GbE LOM, and PERC H710i RAID. When you figure the above ebay link is $2500, and remove the 32GB RAM (probably 4x8GB for $40-50 ecah) and the 2x E5-2620's for about $250 each (too little?), you're looking at $700-800 less. So $1700 or so. Compared to the SuperMicro here for $299 + some parts (drive trays, rack rails, etc).

I'm sure there are other 1U boxes that are great deals that would be cheaper than the R620 example, but it's the one I could comment on quickly and with the most familiarity.

I'm pretty sure I just talked myself into a pair of them.... ;)

Just looking at these again, I wonder if they have 3x usable PCIe slots (e.g. are the risers there?) That would make the boxes extremely useful if so.
