Nice find! So is everyone saying these will have to be modified to fit the SC846 24 bay model chassis?

I guess this states the differences so it should work.

The power distributor is different from a 1200 PS to that used in the 846 case that comes with a 1k28PSQ or 920 SQ PS, you can buy the part, ~120USD new
Power Supply PWS-1K21P-1R 2 1200W 1U GOLD LEVEL PWS WITH PM BUS
Power Distributor PDB-PT846-8824 1 SC846 24PIN REDUNDANT POWER DISTRIBUTOR

Power Supply PWS-1K28P-SQ 2 1U 1280W, redundant single output power supply
Power Distributor PDB-PT846-2824 1 PDB with 23pairs input connector support SC846B

Power Supply PWS-920P-SQ 2 920W 1U Redundant PWS W/ Quiet Mode
Power Distributor PDB-PT846-2824 1 PDB with 23pairs input connector support SC846B
I tried to get 2 for $100 then worked up to $130 for two and he countered with $160 and then declined.

Savings Of Buying these is negated by having to pdus. Might as well get the 920s

My use case for these is that they're cheap as you won't find any 920-SQ models up for anywhere near this price and it'll substantially cut down on the noise in my server room vs what I have now.

I'm surprised to learn that the PWS-1K28-SQ is not compatible with a CSE-846 chassis.
If they have some compatibility issues, how can we check supermicro PSU compatibility with a specific chassis ?

Supermicro chassis' all use interchangeable parts, but there are several generations of each chassis type, and several versions and revisions of each part. I have seen old scsi versions of what otherwise looks like a newer SAS2 chassis for sale, or in our case, I have seen 2 variants of the SC846 in terms of quickrail mountings, and at least 3 variants of the power distribution board and wiring harness which the PSUs plug into.

This is from my experience, but I don't have part numbers handy:
  • The old SC846 chassis with about twice the space between the 2 rows of tabs that accept the inner rails had a power board which would ONLY physically accept older non-80-plus PSUs like the PWS-902-1R. I no longer have it so I cannot get the part number or anything. I compared the PSUs, and there must be a very slight physical difference in the dimensions since the connector seems to have the same dimensions and key slot location. It is possible that if I had tried harder to jam it in, the newer PSU would have worked.
  • Newer 8x6 chassis' seem to all have a power board with a narrow connector which accepts any PSU other than the 1400W gold and the 1280W SQ models, those have a wider card edge connector.
  • SC847 36-bay chassis' of every vintage I have looked at all take the higher power psus with the wider connector.
Power supplies in the photo:
  • pws-1k21p-1r - pws-920p-1r - pws-902-1r
  • pws-1k28p-sq- pws-1k41p-1r

If you have no very old 846, you can do a bit hack by removing extra pcb on PSU....

1k28 or 1k4 has wider pcb slot.
I assume that your usage not reach 1000W :p. you are ok

Do you have a guide on how to make the modification?

So has everyone been dremeling these then?

I noticed that the PDB for the SC745 may also fit a SC846 case since it has the same short edge to short edge configuration, vs the long edge configuration used in the SC826, SC836, SC837 and SC847, and there was an SC847 PDB which looked like it had the wide connectors up for something like $25 shipped a month ago, did anyone here get it / has anyone tried that?

Anyway, it looks like these are back at $85 each OBO again:
Supermicro Switching Power Supply PWS-1K28P-SQ 80 Plus 1280 Watt

I bought too many, and now have extras. I think I can fit up to 4 in a long Priority Mail flat rate box with decent padding, so I'll do $80 shipped for 1, $150 shipped for 2, $210 for 3 or $260 for 4, PM if interested.

I'm running a couple of these and they're not quiet. They make a low pitched drone rather than a high pitched whine. Since I'm hard of hearing in the higher frequencies, I prefer the high pitched whine. You're mileage may vary.

Good point, and you're lucky in this situation! Hmmm, what do you do about your case fans? Do you run them at lower speed or higher speed, and do you bother to replace them with quieter models?

I still have good high range hearing, and to my ears, the noise from a server is mostly high frequency, so for me, these are nicely less noisy than any of the non-SQ model power supplies. I ran my SC847 on a single PWS-920p-SQ for a year or so, and as others have said, it is even quieter than these PWS-1K28P-SQ. With my hearing range, any noise the PWS-920P-SQ made was completely drowned out by the other PWM case fans even on low speed. When I replaced it with a PWS-920P-1R, I immediately noticed a relatively loud high pitched whine added to the mix. The rack is right under the living room in my rare CA basement, so I want to mitigate noise, but don't require -SQ. I also want to optimize power efficiency, which is why I am running that system on a single PWS-741P-1R right now - about the same noise as the PWS-920P-1R, but a couple of watts less power draw.

Compared to the older non-80plus Supermicro power supplies though, any 80plus unit is a lot quieter even if it a -1R and not a -SQ model. The PWS-902-1R sounds like a small jet engine, even with no load and the system turned off.

Haven't done anything with the case fans yet. At present, the noisiest piece of gear I own is a Gnodal GS4008. I've got some new fans to install that will hopefully quieten this beast done. Right now I have it in a corner surrounded by a desk and other misc stuff in an attempt to muffle the sound but it doesn't help much. It's insanely noisy. :(
