Hi STH,

I currently own a couple of Xeon D 1541 motherboard with the active cooler in the SUPERMICRO CSE-721TQ-250B Black Mini-Tower Server Case. I currently have these in a cupboard with limited airflow and they're running pretty cool (45C). To save some space I am looking at the Superchassis Cse-505-203B 200W 1U Rackmount Server Chassis. I have read these are very quiet but I havent heard anyone comment on airflow.

Can anyone comment on whether the Superchassis Cse-505-203B 200W 1U Rackmount Server Chassis would need front mount fans or is the active cooler for the CPU sufficient?

Thanks,

Adam

Doesn't the 505-203B have the motherboard facing front? If you have any of the passive heatsinks you will need to use one to three 40x28mm fans and have them blow TOWARDS the heatsink. Supermicro sells some Nidec (https://store.supermicro.com/40mm-fan-0100l4.html) fans as 'quiet' but these do ~ 10 CFM, hence the need for 2-3 fans at least

That's the reason I went with a slightly bigger CSE-512

Thanks for the response. Yes the has the 505-203B have the motherboard facing front which suits me just fine for easy cabling.
I am really interested to know if the active fan on the xeon d's are capable of being cooled without extra fans. If so I may just stick with the larger and quiter fan in the CSE-721TQ-250
