Anyone in the market for 8GB ECC DDR3-1600 Modules, these are the cheapest I've found. They're Super Talent brand which you may not have heard of, but they employ Micron memory chips same as Crucial. They're compatible with server boards like the Supermicro X8SIL series, X9SCM series.

I ordered 4 of them last week to max out my board with 32GB, and they run flawlessly on a X8SIL, I ran MemTest86+ for about 12hrs with all 4 modules installed and no errors reported. Superbiiz also frequently has coupon codes floating around, they tend to show up at sites like TechBargains.com -- in the past couple weeks there have been $10 off $100 and a 20% off entire order coupons - since expired but keep your eyes peeled there are always new ones.

Note: If you're going to order less than 4 modules then I'd suggest ordering 1 at a time so you get them at the cheap First Class shipping rate of $2-$3 rather than UPS Ground @ $11. With 2+ modules, the option for First Class shipping rate goes away.

Big question is whether to invest in these or RDIMMs that are about $65 per 8GB 1600MHz CL stick.

It's a very good price, but with 16GB modules having finally dropped to just under $150, I plan to focus on those - especially since the latest server motherboards seem to have just 16 RAM slots.

Nice price. How is/are Supertalent with regards to reliability? Anyone here have experience with their RMA service? This looks really tempting.

Can't speak to their RMA service (I don't own any ST RAM), they do offer a lifetime warranty

RDIMM may be better for E5/G34 systems to allow you to get into 16GB modules a little sooner.
Exactly.. These modules are ideal for the X3400 and E3 Xeon type motherboards like the ones listed in the OP that only have 4 or 8 memory slots, and dont take RDIMMS. With a board for an E5 Xeon you'd you'd probably want RDIMMS.

These modules are for the many people with X8SIL, X9SCM, etc that only have 4 memory slots and the board maxes out at 32GB.

This is very tempting indeed. I know that Supermicro boards are very picky about RAM, hopefully these would work well with my Supermicro X9SCM-F-O.
