Can anyone suggest an old (cheap/small) Enterprise drive that is readily available and suitable for use as a RAID Cache ?
I know the rough specs that I would like to meet (2.5" SLC SSD, 16+GB, SAS2 or SATA3)
I am just not familiar with brands/models that work well for this application.

I plan to use a 2.5" to 3.5" Drive adapter from a dead Velociraptor, tray it and add it to one of my SAS Hotswap Backplane Enclosures, so oddball tall 2.5" drives will also work, as the Velociraptor that I removed was quite a thick boy....

Thanks for any and all suggestions.

cheap is relative: the awesome hgst husmm are about 3x times the price vs. pre covid/chia. the 200gb model went from <$30 to $100+ each...

200GB is far more than I need and I was hoping to find something well under 100GB, so that even Chia guys would have passed it by due to size for under $100.

The 'male' end is standard SATA and the 'female' end is undivided, so physically it will accept a SAS drive. (I have the RED PCB adapter).
It has the same ends as the basic Dell UFO70 blue SAS/SATA interposer.

I may have to setup the test bench and connect a SAS HDD to the tray's connector, then a 4x SATA/SFF-8087 breakout cable to a RAID card to check compatibility.

Thanks. I found a starting point.

That pair just seems too good of a deal compared to the others listed, or perhaps it's a good deal and the others are all overpriced.

thanks for the help.

I may have a drive or 2 of the 100GB HUSSL sitting around here, for sure have some 200GB SAS3.

The performance difference between the 100GB SAS2 and 200GB SAS3 is pretty big though, for a cache drive I'd rather have the unused space and > performance

If you need anymore let me know happy to see what's sitting around

Are you sure you don't need 24x 400GB SLC drives :D :D
