I'd like to keep the price below 600, and obviously avoid anything QLC. Besides that I've got choice paralysis :)

Must be NVMe and 4TB "class" (so 3.6 would be acceptable) as a single drive, unless theres a screamingly better option at 2TB (I could do 2 drives, but prefer a single drive for this) I would highly prefer new, but with enough reasoning I could justify certified used. There will be 4-8 VMs running on the drive at any given time, and it's a xcp-ng (xen) host if that makes any difference. I'm more concerned about endurance and random/small IO than top speed. The server itself is only PCIe gen 3 anyways.

I tried searching, forgive me if I missed a good thread (and please link it if I did).

EDIT: M.2 and U.2 from factor.

What form factor are you looking for? AIC, 2.5", or M.2? Tons of 3.84TB options in the $400-500 range.

There just isn't nearly as much in M.2 or AIC available (not counting consumer models). Tons for U.2 however.

Any consumer models worth considering? Since this is a test and might expand to another 9 servers I'm a bit concerned hinging plans on ebay availability :) If nothing else having an alternative as a backup plan would be good

Actually, come to think of it, would a PCIe U.2 carrier fit in a HH-HL slot? Would that be a better way to go? It's going in a dell server so it should get enough cooling

Just about everything I run is Supermicro, so not too versed there unfortunately. Maybe someone else will be able to provide some input.

Gotcha, appreciate the help for sure :)
To circle back, is there anything in the consumer spare or alternatives to the PM983 you'd suggest? Just to have a plan B :)

How do the two models compare for real world VM use?

Also, any U.2 Suggestions?

I use intel p4510 4tb for standalone esxi hosts, and 8tb for vSAN capacity tier. They're a good balance between capacity, performance, and cost for VM storage.

You can find a used one on ebay with 98% endurance life remaining for about $400-500

I'm facing some internal resistance on buying used storage. Trying to get people to have open minds, still thanks for the suggestion and us
age report.

Ok, I got the go-head to get certified/refurbished SSDs finally. If anyone has model suggestions (mostly looking at U.2 or M.2 drives) that are not already covered I'd be glad to hear them
