I have two of these cards

    http://s21.postimg.org/nlb6yf2g7/IMG_20150308_165338.jpg

According to ebay they are "Intel Server Internal SAS RAID 8 Port SATA PCI-e S6i PBA G27504-601 Adapter Card".

Does someone know what are they exactly? I don't think they are normal Raid controllers

I don't know if it helps you, but according to this document, the code G27504-601 corresponds to RMS25PB080.

Perhaps someone else can help you from there :)

apparently these cards are not recognized on "non-intel" servers.
tried them on two different systems (one desktop and one server) but there is no sign of life from the card during the boot or in the OS...

Check the cards specs on ark.intel.com. Some of the Intel cards are locked to Intel motherboards only. While they can be flashed to equivalent LSI cards, they will still function only on compatible Intel MBs. The cards with the SAS 2108 chip can't be flashed to IT mode. Fellow forum member @vanfawx has successfully flashed SAS 2208 based card to IT mode using SAS2308 FW.
